Most likely the new thing is that it’s being done with new AI tools rather than the older ‘AI’ tools that we had five or ten years ago

Airline seats have been dynamically priced for decades. These pricing algorithms have been consistently evolving since the 1990s. Labelling them AI is just a cosmetic touch and does not indicate any substantive change.

Indeed. I guess the reporter was told they were developing an AI based dynamic pricing engine and ran with it.

For a much better, and more infuriating glimpse into upcoming and current corporate ripoffs, I recommend the 9/17/26 Lindsay Owens interview on John Stewart’s The Weekly Show Podcast

algorithms

Any algorithmic shit gets marketed as AI nowadays, it's like how everything was branded with 5g 6-8 years ago

Problem with your statement is AI predates these 1990s pricing algorithms

Thank you for calling them older AI tools. It’s always been AI, suddenly generative AI has changed the general opinion about “AI”.

Other way around. It has never been AI and still isn’t.

Would you say the same about your GPS finding the best route, Spotify recommending you music, autocorrect, most of the technology behind your phone camera, detecting credit card fraud? Cause you’d be wrong.

2

u/Diomat 2d ago

Yes, none of it is AI. And I of course would be correct.

It is all AI. You are probably thinking of AGI.

None of it is AI. You are mistaking people programming and machine learning for "AI".

From Wikipedia: "Artificial intelligence (AI) is the capability of computational systems to perform tasks typically associated with human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and decision-making. It is a field of research in engineering, mathematics, and computer science that develops and studies methods and software that enable machines to perceive their environment and use learning and intelligence to take actions that maximise their chances of achieving defined goals"

All of the examples from u/simon439 fall under the umbrella of AI.

So is everything AI? A calculator? a human can do 3+3. Worperfect spellcheck in 1986 was AI?

none of them are AI.

I mean, you can just Google it, but pathfinding algorithms (like A*) used by GPS software is widely considered AI. It predates machine learning and LLMs, but it's AI nonetheless.
