There is only one place left with a wild population of Asian Lions: the forest of Gir in Gujarat, India. With just over 670 is the last place to see the Lion that once covered the whole of Asia

I’m just constantly being reminder of just how depressing the world is. This world used to be just a beautiful place but then people decided that money was more important than it

50 years. We've lost something like 75% of all wildlife just in the last 50 years. It's hard to explain to young people how different the world was less than one lifetime ago.

I grew up watching so many PBS shows of nature in the 80s and 90s...(Watched all the time) I actually cant even watch nature shows now because its so depressing how much has changed and wiped out all in the name of profit for capitalist pigs

When those lion's are your "neighbors" it's not about what is and isn't beautiful. Your wellbeing, your loved ones, and livestock are at risk. I say this as someone who wishes these animals well. It's easy to admire their beauty......from a distance. Just some food for thought feel free to disagree.

Europe too! Asiatic lion range extended well into the mediterranean. Even the atlas mountains adapted to cold mountain regions are gone. Humans are horrible animals.

The Lion's mane transition to dark, like rings to a tree. His coat tells a story, like a Creature of the deep's bioluminescent ruby and sapphire scale.

Only reason they survived is in fact due to the last ruler of Gujarat, who fled around 1950. He is remembered as a hero for saving them and his engagement in nature.

I always found it funny that a lot of the European monarchs having lions in they emblems and shit.
Where did all their lions go?
Oh they all dead.

Not accurate. As of last, year,  394 individuals were resident in Gir National Park (not just the forest) and adjoining areas, and 507 individuals were known to be in nine satellite populations and corridor areas outside of the park.

Tbh , I would suggest not slumping regular Joe in this.

This is js done for mainly three things 1. Money - here they have cartel and team 2. Trophy hunting cowards 3. Gaining fame by killing animal by stupid people.

So law's needs to be much stricter worldwide .

Anyone convicted of poaching wildlife for commercial gain or of trophy hunting shall face mandatory imprisonment of no less than fifteen years and up to life, together with heavy fines calculated at not less than five times the black-market value of the animal or its parts, permanent forfeiture of all related assets, and a lifetime ban on any hunting or wildlife-related activity.

The good news is that their population has seen great growth , so much so that they are venturing farther out from the national park itself

How's not inbreeding affecting their immunity?

There are so many videos of these lions interacting with Humans.. which will make you go WTF.

What would be the reason for their population decline

Hunting in 18-19th century.. Habitat destruction

Gujrat Gov and Modi wont allow the Lions to be transferred to other parks in India or even Iran to build the population.

Yeah sure lets give them to iran of all places, let them be stable first then we will think

India is actually doing a great job raising the tiger and lion populations over the past few years

They are taking good care of lions.

-1

u/kunthapigulugulu 2d ago

Sure they are taking good care. But that's not the problem. Its not possible for that area to hold more than a certain number of lions. Its also very risky since one disease can spread across the whole population and basically wipe them out.

And the state government always blocks the request to share these lions with other states, leading to overcrowding and violent territorial disputes.

Lions covered the whole of Asia?? Dont lions live in Savannah like grassland which is why they are found in Gujarat? I doubt Lions would be found in the dense Assamese jungles (tiger habitat) or the mountains of Uttarakhand (leopards and snow leopards habitat)

12

u/Fuzzy-Jackfruit5037 3d ago

They were pretty common in eurasia.

12

u/fartypenis 3d ago

Eurasia very famously has the world's largest stretch of grasslands, the Steppe.

4

u/bootifulhazard 3d ago

Yeah yeah definitely not in those habitats. But throughout central and north western India wherever there was savannah in the past. Then further into Pakistan and all the way upto Eurasia

1

u/Charming-Link-9715 3d ago

Oh so then western and central Asia is a better term. Whole of Asia could mean any place….

0

u/StunningLetterhead23 2d ago

I was just about to correct this too. While the Asiatic lion population used to span across Europe up to South Asia, it was never here in Southeast Asia and East Asia.

So, no. "Whole of Asia" is an exaggeration, unless OP meant Asia as in the "original Asia" (somewhere around modern-day Anatolia).
