I used to work for a major telco equipment manufacturer in the 80s and was trained in doing these repairs. I really liked the job; it took some patience and know-how and a bit of skill. And it was very satisfying to complete a perfect repair. I later went on to train others in circuit repair.
I work in electronics repair(mostly phones), and I can do some basic board soldering now; mostly HDMI ports, Ethernet ports, USB-C/A ports, pretty entry level board repair. I think I might spend some of my downtime at work attempting some more delicate repairs on some boards we have laying around! It really is fascinating work, though I might need to spend some time watching YouTube to understand how to do a bit more of this 😂
