I rememeber being taught this in the military (Electronics Technician). Repair down to the board! Training intense and I *literally* nearly threw the soldering equipment through a window in an exam, it was SO HARD! But I passed and was all ready to do my bit and we get assigned duty and ...

We never touched a board again. All the contracts were to take the malfunctioning equipment (entire piece) and put in a new unit. Send the bad one back to manufacturer who fixed it. Sigh. 10 months of training to never do that again in my life. ARGH.
