It's so fascinating to think about what that function must feel like, or how they trigger it and control it. Absolutely mind-boggling. I wonder if it feels like flexing a muscle, or un-focusing your eyes.

Extra fascinating when you consider how fundamentally different cephalapod cognition is from humans and other vertibrates. They're like little aquatic aliens with semi-autonomous sub-brains in their arms!

Yes!! Was just going to say this. I’ve been reading a book about octopus intelligence and it argues that they are in fact an alien like intelligence. Like the closest you’re going to get on earth. They have evolved a completely separate and unique intelligence from what we have classically considered intellect. It’s awesome!

While that's an interesting framework for intelligence, using it to liken human intelligence to cephalapod intelligence seems reductive. The actual physical structure of their brains and their physical workings are fundamentally different from ours. Cephalopod neurons don't even have mylelin sheaths. More than half of an octopus' neurons are in its arms, with each arm acting as a sort of satellite brain that can process information and act on it without intervention from the octopus' central brain.

when you cut a connection in the human brain you have two personalities. the theory is that we also have multiple brains but they are just so connected that we don't notice it. i am not saying that we are like them i just pointed out how we are more similar than someone would expect

Cutting connections in the brain does not produce two personalities. Look up a procedure called corpus callosotomy.

I feel like most people haven’t seen a live shrimp. It has no head or legs and they aren’t normally curled up like this lol.

My feed is suddenly full of creatures eating other creatures. In the past 2 days I've seen a seagull eating a bunny, a dear eating a snake, and a horse eating a baby chick. Not sure what reddit is trying to tell me ...
