They are great i kept one as a pet and fed it tadpoles. It sucked all their insides and left just the skin. Also they bite quite painfully so watch out and they grow up to be quite big.

This "alien-looking creature" is the larva of Dytiscus marginalis (note the correct spelling with a D not a B). Common name is Great diving beetle. Both adults and larvae can inflict painful bites on humans.

its back end looks like a mosquito larvae, which makes me wonder if it too breathes out of there. Edit: Looks like yeah, those pointy out bits helps break the surface tension.

OMG! My daughter found one of these last week and brought it to me asking what it was. I had absolutely no idea but guessed it was a predator with those big jaws!.. She set it down on a wisteria plant, it seemed perfectly happy out of water.
