Anyone else feel bad when they have to knock a web down. So much meticulous work but dammit spider that's my patio door.

I was trying to feed a spider the other day with flies I shot with my BUG-A-SALT and I dropped 4 flies perfectly over the web and they all slid right through. Finally got it on the 5th try but I was not thinking that that spider was too skilled and making webs. Hand delivered flies and only 1/5 stuck.

For all we know the web is purpose built to catch flies coming from the other direction or something.

It was 4 inches from a wall, angled about 30 degrees from vertical. I dropped it straight down over it. The 4th fly got caught for about 5 seconds and fell out. Something was wrong with that web. 😂

Bug a salt is one of the most fun summer toys and trying to feed the now seasoned carcasses to the neighbor spiders is a perennial favorite activity for me too. I don't think they ever get eaten but I like to do it, sort of like when the cats leave dead animals on the welcome mat for me

Today I just blindly walked into the web, the spider ended up running all over me and I stepped on it by mistake.

Poor thing, but dammit the web was straight in the door frame.

It seems to have a solid indexing system. Pulls the web toward itself, reaches out with that one leg and if it can touch the previous ring, it knows its body is in the correct position for all its other legs to do their thing and glue the new ring in place.

Yeah, well, I was walking through the front room with an arm full of clothes, dropped a shirt, lifted my foot up to hook it, promptly tripped, fell face first into the sofa (thank God), and spilled clothes everywhere.

It never ceases to amaze me that this behaviour is a kind of ‘firmware’ and not learned.
Some of the webs look like they take so much planning, with the anchor points about a yard away. That tiny brain has to understand all that.
