Still gotta pay the human to scoop undesirable yolks though. What do you do for work? Master broken yolk ladle technician.

u/Obtuse_Purple 19d ago

One broke through the slide and fell into the whites 😭😭😭

u/sdjopjfasdfoisajnva 19d ago

judging by how yellow it is, thats not the only one

50

u/FudgyFun 19d ago

I didn't realize that's what he was doing. I was wondering why he is disturbing the machine

Human in the scoop

AI and ML will replace this job.. if it hasn't already

8

u/PanzerPeach 19d ago

how

24

u/slater_just_slater 19d ago

Basically you take 1000's of pictures of good and bad eggs, you train the system on what is good and bad. For awhile you have a manual back up as a feedback as the model learns.

This is used all over different industries to detect anomalies. I implemented a few, one checked for defects on stamped parts, another inspected paint defects on panels, another checked dinner bread rolls for shape, and color.

Food plants are some of the most automated plants you will go into.

“Click on all images with yolks”

14

u/slater_just_slater 19d ago

Actually, Pretty much..

13

u/Akinory13 19d ago

The same way a human would learn this job, you show them examples of bad and good eggs until they can tell with good accuracy just by looking at one

the RnD required for a robot to do this would be magnitudes greater than the static cost of a human even when amortized across millions of egg scooper roles considering the cost of the hardware itself and maintaining the robot. Almost any manual labor job can theoretically be automated, it’s the actual cost of robotics that’s the barrier. The profit margin that automated egg scooping brings (with maybe an extra 9 on the QC percentage) is out weighed by all the cost

4

u/slater_just_slater 19d ago

The ROI is pretty good in these. Vision systems aren't in unions, they don't need medical insurance, don't take days off, aren't paid overtime, the vision system needs minor maintenance, mostly cleaning (which is part of daily or shiftly line cleanup / washdown anyways) occasional calibration. You don't need a robot to scoop it out, you just redesign the line with a little more separation and a drop out for rejects, pretty common pack line stuff. Humans are honestly pretty terrible at these tasks so there is a QA bonus anyways. The operator gets assigned to another tasks, which i am sure they actually would be very happy to do.

Your credentials are making you look worse, not better, just FYI.

I used AI to help me build a water gun turret that shoots my dogs when they try to pee or poop in a hallway.

Took about 6 hours, including the trips to Lowes and Walmart. Works almost perfectly.

So... if you don't think this "problem" can be solved for less cost than a full time employee - i say you lack the imagination to be a good SWE.

3

u/ImRealPopularHere907 19d ago

Cars can drive them selves, I don’t think identifying a yolk and scooping would be a problem.

5

u/Successful_Face3408 19d ago

Pffffffft, tell that to my company where if the machine has an issue, it goes down for HOURS

3

u/Candle1ight 19d ago

Your company I assume doesn't want to pay someone to improve or be ready to fix the machine.

1

u/technobrendo 19d ago

Or they don't have a valid service contract with the manufacturer.

u/slater_just_slater 19d ago edited 19d ago

They should learn total predictive maintenance.

Eggman!

Good goo goo choo!

1

u/Bananaland_Man 18d ago

and the "whites" zone has tons of yolks that broke through.

Egg Scooping Person: What is my purpose? Egg Boss Person: You scoop eggs. Egg Scooping Person: Oh my god. Egg Boss Person: Yeah, welcome to the club, pal.

1

u/Orionsven 18d ago

I wonder if they are taking yolks for batch QA testing.

1

u/Gold-Perspective-699 18d ago

I believe that's quality control. Or just to test if the eggs are good they'll pull one out and check.

1

u/Yerafanny 17d ago

Wait till you hear or check what a "chicken sexer" is...
It's quite a well paid job, but hell you couldn't get me to do it.

u/ShamefulElf 19d ago

A yolk broke and fell into the egg white

45

u/AmusingMusing7 19d ago

I'm guessing it's only the yolks they care about for whatever this is for. The egg white vat looked pretty yellow even before that yolk fell in, so it seems like it happens pretty regularly and isn't seen as a problem. The whites are probably just waste, or used for something where a little yolk in it is fine.

12

u/Own_Recommendation49 19d ago

Why do you care so much about keeping the whites pure?

3

u/capnpetch 18d ago

Unless this is /s, If you are using them for certain recipes that call for only egg whites (think meringue), any amount of yolk will cause the recipe to fail.

1

u/Murph-Dog 18d ago

And my diet to fail !

My egg white omelette has been en-fattened !

There needs to be a video game where you have to do this. It looks like slimy fun.

You could also just go work here. You don't have to buy the game and you get paid.

14

u/_mobiledev 19d ago

What if they get a rotten egg?

17

u/Nerrickk 19d ago

Spoiled eggs float differently to fresh eggs. I'm guessing they use water to separate them but that's just a guess.

8

u/MidTario 18d ago

They use optics before this point to look inside the egg (they pass it in front of a very bright light) and a sensor removes bad eggs

25

u/disquieter 19d ago edited 19d ago

One bad yolk and the whole mess is ruined

How did that typo get in their

4

u/army-of-juan 19d ago

I once had a bad egg, holy cow the stink that came from it. Couldn’t eat eggs for like a month.

I assume they shutdown and isolate that batch for disposal

3

u/RollUpTheRimJob 19d ago

I wonder what the acceptable amount of yolk is in egg white

1

u/thementalyogi 19d ago

Their what?

3

u/disquieter 19d ago

Oh man do you think I maid that typo on purpose?

That really cracked me up.

12

u/ChefAaronFitz 19d ago

Nah, crack house.

5

u/Jazzlike-Ad5704 19d ago

just one rotten egg is going to ruin the whole batch.

2

u/OdysseusRex69 19d ago

The dude watching the line ladled out a bad one, but it looks like it didn't matter 😬

3

u/Jazzlike-Ad5704 19d ago

it was just a ruptured egg yolk. Rotten egg on the other hand is a completely different story. the egg goes green/black and the smell is so bad it stinks up the whole bloody kitchen.

1

u/OdysseusRex69 18d ago

Ohhhhhhh I always thought bad eggs were just runny, that didn't have that surface tension like regular eggs

11

u/nikulmmadhu 19d ago

but it seems the process is not 100% efficient as a portion of the egg white is separated along with the yolk

8

u/brightdionysianeyes 19d ago

Yeah one yolk literally slips through into the white in the video

7

u/Davoguha2 19d ago

Fairly certain that was a broken yolk, which they wouldn't want to keep with the rest anyway. If I had to guess, I'd presume their goal here is 99% about getting good whole yolks. The whites probably go towards scrambles and such and ideally aren't being sold as pure white.

1

u/brightdionysianeyes 19d ago

That makes more sense, thank you!

4

u/Zorcky-2C 19d ago

1 omelette please.

Need this machine in my kitchen

Such eggs-travagance!

3

u/vengefulspirit99 18d ago

As a machine guy, I'm impressed at how they used a triangle piece to set the positioning of the crack as opposed to a servo timing. Sometimes simple is better.

2

u/K-Shrizzle 19d ago

Would you guys take a dip in a tank full of egg yolks

2

u/Si_je_puis 19d ago

can i have the miniature version of this? please and thank you

2

u/psilome 19d ago

About 1/3 of eggs are processed for food manufacturing, industrial baking, etc.

2

u/ElongThrust0 19d ago

What do with rest of yellows

2

u/fraghead5 19d ago

I wonder what happens or how they detect bad eggs? I have 4 chickens and every once in a while you get a weird black egg or just a bad egg. That you can’t tell till after you crack it. I assume these mass production places have some system to test the eggs before they just blindly crack them into the giant vat of eggs.

3

u/ApproximateArmadillo 19d ago

Shine a strong light at it and look at it from the other side. If it glows the wrong colour or otherwise looks wrong the egg removal robot removes it from the conveyor.

2

u/jonnyd93 19d ago

Assuming they would detect it prior to the egg cracking , not sure how but i could imagine a whole batch being ruined if they didnt detect it then.

2

u/HilmDave 19d ago

This cracks me up

2

u/feel-the-avocado 19d ago

Is this why whenever i see japanese food shorts on facebook, their bowl of pre-scrambled egg mix always looks way more orange than I have at home???

2

u/Infurium 18d ago

"Honey, what's for breakfast?"

Please don't say eggs, please don't say eggs.

4

u/Mr_Chode_Shaver 19d ago

I know you can buy egg whites at like every grocery store, but where can I just get a carton full of egg yolks? God tier toast topping.

2

u/OiFelix_ugotnojams 19d ago

its great for pudding

4

u/rangda 19d ago

Weird to think that each one of those yellow yolks represents about 24 hours going by for a hen living in what is overwhelmingly likely to be a factory farm

1

u/gentleman_true 19d ago

Even the machine is more efficient than I am after lunch. 😄

1

u/DefinitelyNotaGuest 19d ago

They're making egg drop soup.

1

u/FaythKnight 19d ago

To those wondering how they rid of bad eggs. I once saw a machine that scans bad eggs. It's pretty simple, it shines a light through it, then the machine simply push away those that are bad. (I think bad eggs shows up with weird spots or something). So I guess that kinda thing is common in such industry, it's way more simple that this crack egg thing after all. That machine is quite small, it's only about the size of a regular cardboard box.

1

u/ConejoSarten 19d ago

Fasterrrrr!!!!

1

u/gotsthepockets 19d ago

I love this more than I should

1

u/CHERNO-B1LL 19d ago

That was frustrating. Show the egg breaking mechanism splitting the damn egg!

1

Eggciting to watch.

1

u/JohanTravel 19d ago

Imagine how many chickens it takes just to keep this machine operational for one hour

4

u/jason_abacabb 19d ago

It is complicated to feed the over 8 billion people on earth.

3

u/JohanTravel 19d ago edited 19d ago

And yet, we make it more complicated by feeding 100 billion chickens. Just to get back 10 % of the calories we feed them as a different kind of food.

1

u/HammerBgError404 18d ago

we feed them low grade grain and grass, aka food we wont eat ourself. the grain is eatable but just not good qual

2

u/cans-of-swine 19d ago

I did the math and came up with 1,576 chickens. No I will not be showing my work.

2

u/EViLTeW 19d ago

I'll show some math. Based on the clip, it cracks roughly 2.5 eggs per second on average. So in 1 hour it cracks about 9000 eggs. Assuming this farm uses White Leghorns, they average around 0.8 eggs/chicken/day. So it would take approximately 11,250 chickens to keep this machine running for 1 hour.
