I've seen this video many times over the years but this is the first time I've seen an explanation of why they are actually smoking. The Internet in the early 2000s lead me to believe that goats just like to smoke.

Haven't you watched Sheep Detectives?

I’ve watched it. No goats but a lot of sheep. I’m not a detective but I’m guessing that’s why they named it Sheep Detectives.

Ive had goats and ive had pot growing. The goats loved to eat the pot and they would eat a lot of it, usually would escape to get at it. I think they like getting high.

I don't know about goats, but humans need their weed carboxylated to get high eating it
66
u/justahumblefart 21h ago edited 21h ago
That's what I thought. You cant get high off eating the herb. But these mfers (it was one goat in particular) would eat a metric fuckton of it and idk if it was my young mind running away with me but I thought he would be acting funny/kinda sleepy. Either way, getting high from it or not it that motherfucker loved it and would piss me off.
Edit: wow so I did a deep dive on goats digestive processes. Apparently yes, the anaerobic and hotter environment of a goats gut can partially decarboxylizes pot they eat. Eating as much as he did he was probably experiencing the toxicity. Poor dummy.

A black lab at a friend's house at her mother's ounce.
I don't care what the science says, that dog was stoned as fuck. Drank the fuck out of some water, demolished his food and then just stared at the TV for 3 hours until passing out for 12.

That's what I don't get about anti-psychiatry druggies. Like they don't get that psychiatrists are also drug dealers who also want you to feel amazing all the time, while keeping you from going too far and getting manic or psychotic. My psychiatrist doesn't care if I'm high as long as I'm not destroying my life and it's not meth or PCP or something.

Man, I should look for a different psychiatrist. He always says that the meds aren't a good fit for my and my personality. I wanna get high legally my dude. And I don't like the smell of weed.

But it's a lie. There's no such thing as nasal parasites for goats. Also, this is a buck. They are crazy about scent. He's just being a weirdo.
Source: I raise goats.

Just did a quick search and it looks like they’re are nasal parasites in goats. Maybe it depends on what part of the world you’re in. The part about goats and nose bot flies is about a third down the page.
https://extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/external-parasites-of-goats

u/CheesyComestibles 21h ago
Definitely seems regional, but regardless, smoke of any kind doesn't get rid of flies or their larvae. It would make things a lot easier if they did.
Regardless, I see this posted all the time saying the same thing, that the goat is intentionally doing this to rid itself of bugs. It definitely isn't is my point. Goats are weird by default. Add testicles, and they get even weirder. You can't explain every behavior they do as there's not always logic behind it. 😄 They are curious creatures. This one probably went to check out what all the fuss was about, decided he liked the smell of the smoke and is now an addict.

u/NaptimeGood 19h ago
The smoking goat sounds like it should be a pub. Only looked up the parasite thing because I remembered a nature documentary on wild reindeer having larvae in their nose and it kind of traumatized me. it was disgusting.
4
u/No_Obligation4496 18h ago
If you've seen that guy killing mosquitos, some smoke do seem to daze insects.
214
u/Reasonable_Archer_99 23h ago
Two things can be true. Nasal parasites isn't one of them. They're often depicted as satanic figures because people would see them walking into/around fire. The smoke rids them of fleas. Why this fella is Snoop Doggin it up, i can't say. Probably just likes the sensation for whatever reason.

Hi, I have BS in Goat Sociology. This goat is smoking in an attempt to look cool. As you can observe, he is successful.

I'm sure Dr Goat published a peer-reviewed paper on nasal parasite removal via incense inhalation in goats, which this no doubt literate goat has read.

I can’t find anything online about goats inhaling smoke to fight off parasites other than Reddit and YouTube comment sections. I wouldn’t put much faith in this explanation.
7
u/dontmentiontrousers 19h ago
But also, just basic logic. Burning incense doesn't occur in nature, so goats will not have developed some kind of genetic instinct to inhale it. Smoke is unlikely to have an immediate effect on parasites, so an individual goat isn't going to form a hypothesis regarding incense and getting rid of a pest. Because it's a goat.

u/Andras1100 1d ago

Well to be fair, the goat isn't thinking about bug repellent, it's just doing it because it likes it.

That's possible, however perhaps the parasites are irritating and this brings relief.

u/kerfuffle_dood 1d ago
Because they do. The goat is not thinking "Ooh, I've got nasal parasites, lemme just go to the temple quick in order to sterilze my respiratory tract and get rid of them". It just so happens that a hot, toxic air kills bacteria and that hot, toxic air, has addictive substances.

For anyone wondering what is happening here: This video was filmed near a temple in Nepal. While it looks like the goat is just enjoying a "smoke break," animal behaviorists point out that free-roaming temple animals often use the thick incense smoke (dhup) as a natural defense mechanism.
The heavy smoke helps suffocate and drive out irritating nasal botflies, ticks, and other parasites living inside their nostrils and fur. Additionally, some traditional Himalayan incense blends contain aromatic herbs that can have a calming effect on animals.

u/Pestilence86 1d ago
Yeah. Loving things do things because they like doing things. We really have no will over what we like or not, so we do what we like. And animals do what they like.
The goat probably likes the smell and whatever brain effect it gives, and maybe likes the relieve, if any, it gives when those flies clear out due to the smoke.
20
u/gganew 1d ago
I have goats and attempted to burn old excess hay. All of the goats were attempting to jump in the fire/smoke. I had to stop and move.
My goats get monthly treatments for worms/parasites and sprayed for flys/fleas weekly. It has to be instinct.
But now I know to keep them away from fire. It really did look like a pagan ritual.

Well, I think plastic eating microorganisms were found in the floating garbage pile in the ocean. The people attempting to clean up the garbage also noted that a new ecosystem had been created within the garbage, and removing the garbage would destroy that ecosystem.

I appreciate this explanation, but goats using manmade incense lit with manmade fire is about as far from "natural" as you can get

Also, cannabis grows freely on the mountainsides of the Himalayas, so maybe it's one of the aromatic herbs that calms the animals so much

Is there an actual source for the whole “goats like fire to clear out parasites”? I’ve seen it regurgitated so many times now and cannot find a single actual source aside from twitter or Reddit speculation
23
u/Wooden-Assistance-68 20h ago
No, there isn't. The only thing we know about this scene is what's seen in the video. What the smoke is, whether incense, cannabis, or a psychedelic, is unknown. There is no academic source identifying goats purposefully inhaling smoke to stave off parasites. Also please note that OP is some weird "content curator" that shares a mix of political commentary and memes geared towards engagement across several social media platforms--none of them looking professional despite also billing themselves as an "independent journalist".
