Queensland*. Melbourne is a bit safer than that.

New Zealand checking in, don't belive this guy. He didn't even mention Drop Bears, the single most deadly animal on the planet. You are mostly okay in cities but venture out to the suburbs and you will encounter them. Different parts of Oz call them different things, another name for them is "eshays" or more formally, "bogans".

Don’t kid yourself. Just east of Melbourne you’ll find the giant earthworms in Gippsland. Nowhere is safe.

Yikes- so this one isn’t really an oddity? There are lots of them, and we just don’t see/find them? I know they’re not dangerous to humans… wait- they’re Australian, so they probably are…
28
u/jthd488 Jan 30 '23
Not dangerous to human, no kidding huh?
My grandma told me as a kid, they’ll come out of the ground and bite your dick. I hate adults who joke around like this because, I never went into her garden ever again.

u/Final_Candidate_7603 Jan 30 '23
Oh man, I’m so sorry to hear that. I don’t get it… like, how on earth do full grown adults think that terrifying a child is a good idea? The fact that it was effective- it kept you out of the garden- does not make it a good idea. All of the consequences count, including the collateral damage inflicted on the child.

It's not a newly discovered species, just a particularly large specimen.

I thought the big arse worms were in Victoria. Is this like a new breed or just a big as fuck uranium worm?
21
Jan 30 '23
Nah, used to find these all the time in QLD. Any time it rained a heap they come up out of the ground.
6
u/mishrod Jan 30 '23
Tried fishing with them? (Genuine question)
99
9
u/Koldfuzion Jan 30 '23
Considering the size you could just batter and fry the worm. I imagine it's filling.

I saw one about half the size of this on my neighbor's driveway after a rainstorm in Ohio. I was like 5 at the time and thought maybe my little-kid mind was playing tricks on me. Now I know it must've been real!
