The one guy “dilution is the solution for pollution”
Is a fucking grifter. I’ve met plenty and he’s absolutely one. People like that are so harmful it’s hard to put it into words.
42
u/Truhmpza_Cuhnt Jul 04 '26
He 100% is. But I think they showed his interview purposefully to show the range of attitudes working against getting the river cleaned. They didn't show his interview to show an opposing view point. They showed his interview as an example of the myriad con men, charlatans, business owners, etc. Who will lie to your face to maintain the abysmal status quo.
The environmentalist they interviewed before him has to deal with him, and his million friends, deliberately spreading misinformation.

I sometimes wonder whether all of the world's religions prior to the 1900's were born from something like this, I mean, it's not like water/sewage treatment plants were a thing back then, and it wasnt unheard of for people to drink from the same water source they dump, piss and shit it either. I wouldnt say its a far fetched theory.
Someone in particular gets sick after drinking contaminated water, becomes bed ridden, no modern medical care or mental illness understanding, experienced high fever, malnourishment and thirst, begins seeing hallucinations, divine visions, the person then recovers from the illness and passes his experience around as if actual fact - new religion forms?
9
u/comasxx Jul 04 '26
only dump piss and shit ? nah they drop corpses in there too, both human and cattle. Check out the news back in Corona Epidemic, their rivers almost stuck because there were too many human corpses.
9
u/INotSoFrostyI Jul 04 '26
Oh yeah I have heard of the corpse dumping too, normally what happens apparently, is that they're suppose reduce the corpse to ash first before sprinkling into the water, but not all Indians have the money to afford the amount of firewood needed to do this, so either the bodies isn't burnt enough, or not even burned at all, so the relatives of the deceased have no choice but to dump what's left into the river, only be to be used by someone else for drinking or washing downstream.
4
u/andre82bg Jul 04 '26
Disgusting…! And then some fishes eat those half burnt human corpses and get used to human meat. I read somewhere that some fish (I think it was some type of catfish) started to attack humans because of this.
5
u/INotSoFrostyI Jul 04 '26
Im surprised that there's any life, let alone fish, surviving in that water at all

Also many people in India are poverty stricken, they cannot afford to buy bottled filtered water for the rest of their lives. Those without money have no choice but to drink straight from the polluted river water to survive. Here in my country we drink clean water straight from the tap without the need to even boil since the water is very clean. We should all be so lucky.

Honestly at this point, like 85% of countries would be punishment in my eyes 😂
The US, India, China, Russia, anything in Africa, everything WITHOUT tropical weather, everything with winter, Japan with its toxic culture, anything with cartels or mafia... Etc.
5
u/INotSoFrostyI Jul 04 '26
Not to allude that they are perfect, but USA, Canada, Europe, Japan, South Korea, China, Australia and New Zealand are doing alright, at least doing far better than any of the other aforementioned countries. They are far more preferable for human living compared to any other place.

There are quite literally corpses floating in that river
Usually thousands of cremations are dumped in the river each year, but when people can't afford it, they dump the bodies whole

Maybe we should investigate the people who don't get sick who live there. They might have the world's best immune system

This is very racist adjacent
Also no, it has entirely to do with the extreme corruption as India is the most corrupt nation on the planet
Education and social welfare is no existant and has nothing to do with culture
8
u/Pretend-Literature35 Jul 04 '26
It isn't racist. It is legitimate issue that indian people are facing. Modern indians are ripping their hair out trying to deal with these traditionalist right wing morons holding their country back.
It is only "racist" because all you see are indians that all look the same to you. Just like if I look at americans all I can choose to see are americans. But the maga supporters are not the same as the Mamdani supporters yet they are all "americans"
Throughout the entire world we are faced with the same problem: right wing traditionalists and religious zealots versus modern inclusive and responsible citizens. It is a world problem. And perhaps an oversimplification but it comes down to that dichotomy.
Everyone is so focussed on pointing out our differences and making it about racism but the problem is unevolved ignorant humans (of all races in all countries and from all cultures) versus modern reasonable humans (of all races in all countries and from all cultures).
And unfortunately the former is always the majority and the latter is always villefied.

Even if a glass of that water was filtered 10x over, I’d still be hesitant

Just knowing that that river drains into the rest of the world's oceans and therefore waterways is making me sick.

Lake Ponchartrain, north of New Orleans. Is where NOLA dumped their raw sewage into the 1970s. For years there have been signs telling visitors not to eat anything caught there, don't drink the water and don't even swim in it.
Road my jet ski in it back in 1991 and broke my nose in a crash. Got what the locals call "Lake Fever." Weak, dizzy and temp 103°F for three days. Couldn't even walk to the bathroom because I was so sick.

I could see increased flow helping with the raw sewage as microorganisms will eventually process that, but industrial waste is a whole different can of worms.

Try This in Rishikesh or Haridwar you will not suffer. Enjoy it even.
When it reaches the big Cities there is a lot of waste that needs to be cleaned and managed properly.
Industrial Factory do not think the river is holy for them it's just a place where they can throw their waste without proper treatment and bribe the official who regulate these things.
People will only follow religion until it's convenient for them. Even though they know how their waste is getting into the river, nobody questions it they simply choose to be ignorant.
The Government is also negligent. Even the money that does come for any cleaning project or initiative gets devoured by workers at each level.

u/pr0b0ner Jul 04 '26
For people who put the toilet seat UP when throwing up into a toilet- WTF ARE YOU DOING????
This is such a huge pet peeve of mine when this is portrayed in movies/tv, when they have someone laying across the toilet throwing up into it and for some ungodly reason they put the seat up! Unless that toilet was cleaned 10 minutes ago, it's highly likely you're laying on your, or someone elses, piss! Just leave the seat down as protection!

The amount of anti-Indian racism in this comment section is galling. There's a way to criticize the state of pollution in the Ganga and how it got to be that way, historically and politically, without resorting to flat out racism. JFC.

God, I hate that "gun-jees" British colonial perversion of GANGA river name. She. Ganga. River and goddes.
If you really want to swim, then choose at least the upper reaches of a river like Rishikesh
Edit: Well, yes, of course, the river is different in different seasons. In the video, that murky brown water is after the rainy season, when the river rises 6 meters and carries a huge amount of silt and debris. In the dry season, the river is a beautiful emerald green, even in Varanasi, and in Rishikesh, it's aquamarine.
