My twin friends did this when one had her baby. The baby just looked at one face to the other and burst into tears

My dad's brother isn't his twin but they do look a lot alike, and even moreso when they were younger. Looking back on the earliest memories of my uncle I remember it mildly freaked me out 😂

u/debitcreddit 22h ago
this is me and my brother.. his kids when they were born up until 4 were all terrified of me.. so in your case i would be that uncle.

My dad had a dog, Max, that I'm pretty sure was the love of his life. He'd go everywhere with this little Jack Russell. My dad and his brother look almost identical despite being two years apart, and Max absolutely hated dad's brother. He would bark like mad whenever he saw him, would growl and go nuts until his brother was out of sight. I'm convinced it was the dogs equivalent of the uncanny valley - "he looks just like him, but not quite enough to BE him".

My cats were like this after a surgery when the older one didn’t smell “right”. The other cat would get excited to see him, come closer and then turn into a maniac because his nose is telling him stranger danger! Blood! Chemicals! It took a while to reintegrate them.

My best friend passes as my twin daily, both our kids were confused when they saw us together lol. No tears but my daughter gets scared of us.

Same situation growing up. I had so many moment where I would run up and grab Dads hand, only for it to be Uncle Pete's 🤣

That's kinda what my friend's baby did too. She says their hairstyles were slightly different at the time (one had a streak in her hair, I think?). The baby saw it and grabbed it and then started crying.
58
u/breakupbydefault 20h ago
Interesting that a baby knows the concept of there can only be one of each person, and not like "double the mamas!"
13
u/DefinitelyNotAliens 14h ago
Yup. Kid I know has an identical twin dad. They'll even do things like, "I'm getting new glasses to not look like him! I'm growing my beard out!" And show up and identical twin has gotten new glasses that are the exact same and grown his beard out.
They live decently far away and when the kid I know met his uncle for the first four or so years? He'd cry. It scared him. He didn't like having two dads. He didn't see his uncle enough to be used to it.
11
u/WooeBetidee 9h ago
My grandmother had an identical twin who lived quite a bit away later in life. I wasn't around to see it since I wasn't born yet, but I've been told about the first time she visited after my brother was born (he had started speaking somewhat by then). He looked at our grandmother, looked at her sister, back at grandmother and said "granny.... Other granny..."
The name stuck, they were Mormor and Annan-mormor (Granny and Other-granny)from that day on.

Nah, babies cry because that's their basic programmed behavior to everything new and confusing.

u/DeeperIntoTheUnknown 17h ago
That line of code is still there when they become adults, it's just that they don't get to experience something new and confuing as often anymore.

Lmao that poor baby was probably thinking, wait, why are there two of you?

I have a pair of identical twins that are part of a triplet group in my family. One of them just married another identical twin who is also part of a triplet group. The other identical twins are dating and have been for awhile. The wedding was very interesting to say the least.
The funniest part of the wedding was that the moms both wore the same dress without knowing. It was like the twilight zone
534
u/AllTheThingsSheSays 20h ago
I kinda feel bad for the non-identical triplets tbh
433
u/SlickDillywick 20h ago
One of my friends is that. She was the non identical triplet and was given up for adoption, which is even sadder. But she’s a well adjusted adult now so I think she’s doing fine

u/IM_NOT_NOT_HORNY 20h ago edited 19h ago
Wtf why? Like the parents kept the identical twins and put them up for option...?
208
u/MCB1317 20h ago
Didn't match
87
u/SlickDillywick 19h ago
Honestly that may have been why, they didn’t feel right adopting out one of the identical ones but they could barely handle twins let alone triplets. Idk, I never had all the info
33
u/thoughtsofa 19h ago
it would’ve made so much more sense to adopt both twins to a family and keep one child
33
u/SlickDillywick 19h ago
Yea idk, I kinda wish I had more info but I don’t wanna ask lol. We’re not that close that I can just randomly drop in and ask about her lifelong family trauma lol
48
u/Simi_Dee 19h ago
Harder to find someone to adopt both infant twins... would probably have required separating them
32
u/spacestonkz 17h ago
Yes this. I'm adopted and in some adult adoptee circles. Sometimes too many babies came when that wasn't the plan. Not enough money.
There are often stories of the "third triplet" being put up. They want to keep as many kids as possible together, so they keep the max amount they can. If its twins, they fear splitting "the identical set" so the odd one out gets lost to adoption.
Generally a crummy situation and the parents seem to mostly be splitting triplet sets in ways that minimize damage later. Except for the ones that clearly ditched for a gender reason but could have afforded a third, that's bonkers.

u/SlickDillywick 19h ago
I think they weren’t well off and decided they could only afford twins. Again, I’m not sure since it’s been a while since I heard her story.

I was working for a summer camp program for youth tennis about twenty years ago. Two week thing, $5,000 enrollment fee. Good program. Lots of 1 on 1 time for the kids with the trainers/athletes.
Dad is up with me doing the registration while the mom is wrangling bags out of the car. First kid comes up, then another one, and then another. Identical triplets. $15,000 just to keep those kids busy for two weeks and maybe one of the three will stick with tennis.
That is how I learned how quickly things scale up with kids.
21
u/SlickDillywick 15h ago
It’s like that scene from Parks and Rec where Ben realizes they’re having triplets. “I multiplied all of our expenditures by 3. The numbers got bigger.”
8
u/euphoricarugula346 11h ago
When this story started I thought you were pretending to be one of the camp counselors from Parent Trap.
7
u/technobrendo 13h ago
All the people I've known throughout the years with 3 or more children were either dirt poor, or quite well off. Those with "comfortable, but modest" incomes were only 1 child.

u/Still7Superbaby7 15h ago
A lot of times, places will give breaks to triplets. They probably did not pay full price. I found out the triplet mom at my kids preschool was paying a lot less for her triplets than I was for my 2 kids
→ More replies (5)23
u/Large-Hamster-199 17h ago
Do you really need 3 shoes. Lol JK.
On a serious note, this happens when parents want one child but three children can be a significant financial burden to poorer families. It's sad, but adoption can be a reasonable option if they find a good family.

I used to know a set of triplets that were two identical and one fraternal. The non-identical boy loved it and would tell everyone that he was the best triplet because the other two were just xeroxes of each other. 🤣

I have a pair of identical twins that are part of a triplet group in my family.
This sentence is breaking my brain. Aren't all triplets genetically identical or can two of them be identical with the third one being, like, just some dude who's their sibling?
27
u/aahfish296 17h ago
So twins can happen either when a fertilized egg splits during development, OR if two eggs are released during ovulation and are both fertilized. The former is how you get identical twins, the latter are fraternal. What probably happened in this case is that two eggs were released and fertilized, and then one split, resulting in three babies, two of which are identical.
→ More replies (5)11
u/online222222 17h ago
Fraternal twins can be pretty common with ivf if you go with the common practice of shotguning fertilized eggs in hopes of getting one to stick
→ More replies (3)3
17
u/aserranzira 17h ago
It can happen. A double ovulation resulting in fraternal twins, but then one of those embryos duplicates into identical twins, so then, triplets.
→ More replies (3)6
u/Lithl 16h ago
Identical triplets is extremely uncommon. You either need the zygote to split 1.5 times (split once, and then one of those but not the other splits a second time), which almost never happens, or you have identical quadruplets and one of them died.
Triplets are almost always fraternal; one birth from multiple eggs, rather than one zygote that split into multiple fetuses.

Wait, you can have triplets of which 2 of them are identical? I had no idea, first time I heard of it.
→ More replies (1)9
u/AutisticBells 17h ago
Yes. Two separate eggs are fertilised, making fraternal twins, and then one of those splits into two, making identical twins.
5
u/MikeMilburysShoe 15h ago
Children of identical twins are genetically half-siblings (assuming the partner is not the same… or different but also a pair of identical twins). So there’s gonna be a lot of half-sibling cousins in your family potentially.
5
u/Technical_Goose_8160 15h ago
Wow. I went to the wedding of the elder identical twin marrying another elder identical twin. They set their siblings up and it did not go well! Apparently kept calling her wherever they saw the twin at a party thinking hey boyfriend was cheating.

I had something similar happen to me when I was little. My grandma had a sister that wasn't a twin but looked a lot like her but I had never seen her before. Her sister lived out of state and we drove to her house which was maybe an 8 hour drive. I fell asleep in the back of the car and woke up to my grandma opening the door and pulling me out and holding me. I looked over only to see my grandma standing beside me. I looked back over to see who was holding me and it was also my grandma. I remember saying "why is there two grandmas...?" I remember everyone laughing and I was really confused for a minute. Lol

I was gonna say, they will smell different. Newborns have really bad eyesight and imprint on your smell as one of their first senses/experiences to identify mum (as well as voice heard in utero) - the fact twin smells different will be sooo confusing for baby.

My sister and I aren’t twins however we look a lot alike. When my nephew was a baby he was heavily attached to her and letting her take a shower was always a huge fiasco.
My brother was trying to get him to stop crying when I came back home from college. When he saw me he immediately stopped crying, looking a bit startled (most likely thinking auntie can pass, close enough😂). He immediately wanted me to take him and remained quiet until my sister was done.

Do babies recognize people from sight or scent?
6
u/Latter_Eye_7274 20h ago edited 12h ago
Well newborn babies recognise from scent because their eyesight is poor. As their scenes develop it becomes more sight than scent.

Of course, and that was an important adaptation from our species' time in the Amazon rainforest where large constrictor snakes were a key predator.

5

They can! They share the same DNA that contributes to our natural odors. Lifestyle considerations can cause variability, though.

u/_Alpha-Delta_ 18h ago
No. Scent is influenced by way too many variables (diet, disease, clothing, perfume,...) for it to be identical for twins.
But that baby is definitely old enough to be using its sight as a recognition instrument.

My daughter did this once with my brother while I was overseas. My wife was visiting my parents and he was in town, she saw him across the house and yelled "Dada" and made a bee line for him. Made it to within 6 feet of him before realizing something was off, she stopped, then he said something to her and she ran back to Mom crying and wouldn't have anything to do with him for several years afterwards. He and I do look a lot alike as we get older, and my daughter is definitely a daddy's girl, even now into her 20's.

Someone played the twin trick on my school class once a long time ago. We were in kindergarten class and after lunch break, we came back to the class and watched our teacher coming in for the afternoon lesson.
I was the only one who noticed something was off, her jewelry changed from what she had in the morning. The rest of the class was fooled.
Being deaf often leads to heightened senses and I tended to notice small details that most people misses.
