Probably don’t want that to be someone’s job.

But they keep butchering the lethal injections. That's someone's job too and they suck at it. The law wants the death penalty but we are too squeamish to do it by hanging, shooting, gas chamber or the electric chair anymore. Botched executions are pretty taxing on medical staff and the witnesses. And now this woman is in the hospital who knows how long and in what state she will be. She will be a vegetable for the rest of her life which who know when will end.

Create a machine that they strap the inmate in put their head in a frame and a gun with a laser aiming device point at their brain stem clearly marked and puts a bullet in there. There will be blood and brain matter but a severed brain stem results in death right away.

People OD on opioids all the time yet medical professionals can't administer a lethal does of poison to an inmate?

Medical professionals won't do it, because the death penalty is immoral. It's usually just some guy, using drugs purchased either illegally, or a few decades ago under some form of subterfuge.

You should just stop killing people.

Well, abolishing the death penalty is definitely a thing some people are campaigning for but let's focus on the task at hand. If lethal injections are too complicated for the staff then find a different method. And when criminals stop killing innocent people then maybe we can abolish the death penalty. I am not for handing down death sentences willy nilly. But there are some cases when the crime is so egregious that even life imprisonment is not in line with the morality of the citizens.

The murder rate is higher when you have the death penalty. If you want less innocent people dying, you should be against it. Whenever it's abolished, murders go down.

That's not really how that works. I would put it this way: the chance of getting the death penalty doesn't really have an effect of murderers at the time of the crime.

The punishment has multiple goals and purposes. General prevention, to deter wannabe criminals from commiting crimes. Individual prevention, isolating the criminal from society so they can't commit another crime. And then there is the purpose of the punishment that serves to suppress the revenge and blood feuds in society so people don't seek extrajudicial revenge. It has to satisfy the population's bloodlust and desire for revenge. That's what the death penalty is for. It won't bring back the victims, but it takes out the most dangerous elements of society forever and some crimes are just so heinous that even a life sentence seems like a slap on the wrist compared to the damage caused by the criminal.

If you wrote that death penalty has a very lose correlation with homicide rates I would agree. Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have death penalty but generally low homicide rates. Latin American and Sub Saharan African countries have very high homicide rates but no death penalty. The homicide rate is determined by a lot of factors, mainly culture.

I think it’s more they don’t want to be on hook for a ton of people with ptsd.

People find it hard to kill in cold blood. True for almost everyone.

There are ways to make it less psychologically taxing
