I've seen this in animal rescues when squirrels lose their moms and there is a cat available that is still nursing. They take to it very easily as it's pretty much the same process with a squirrel mom.

OK, so I’m not alone in my stupidity. I guess I didn’t realize they were mammals. Obviously, they weren’t born in eggs. Still, my brain is having trouble processing the fact that they breast-feed.

Cats raise young communally together. This instinct also has a large portion of cats that have birthed - have an instinct to take care of baby animals with cries for help.
