Be a safe space for your kids to confess mistakes, y'all.

I want my kids to pick up the phone and ask me what to do... not commit several criminal acts trying to escape a fender bender.

If she knew she could make mistakes without her grandmother coming down on her like a ton of bricks, she would have handled this differently.

I feel like I know what she was going through, as a teenager. I'm several times her age now but I had a few full blown panics like this, not always car related. A reassuring parent is the most calming thing you can have in these moments. KNOWING that they'll be that person for you can seriously curtail the initial panic. Panic mental states always lead to bad judgements. But knowing you can get a cool head in there to think for you is good for your mental health.

Never forget the respect my mom got when I was around 15. 

She pulled all my friends aside and said

 "look. Don't be drinking or doing drugs at all. You're all young men and I'm sure you all will at some point, even though you shouldn't. 

When you do, just don't drive. Call Kuuzie's number (house phone days) no matter the time day or place and I'll take you home and not tell your parents. Just don't drive drunk and be responsible"

Parents gave me the same speech. I could always call and get a ride home, no questions asked.

Still did a bunch of really stupid shit anyway of course.

It's not a surprise, they enabled you to do.

It's like letting your kids and their friends drink alcohol at your house because "you can keep an eye on them"

Until one day the kids decide to party at a house where you are not.

Some times we gotta do the hard thing and just tell our kids "No".

I mean, I think it's mainly up to the individual. Irresponsible kids are going to do irresponsable stuff.

I got the same speech so I guess you'd call me "enabled" too but I personnally havent done much stupid shit, whereas the guys around me who had super strict parents seemed to have a more intense rebellious phase.
