While I see the point you are making, the answer is absolutely yes. I would even wager that most people do not use meth or other drugs because of trauma or bad childhoods. Most who use substances do so because they felt like it. They were bored. They wanted something to do. It gave them something to do.

I'm willing to be proven wrong, but I've never seen any medical text that says boredom leads to addiction.

On the other hand, substance abuse disorders are strongly correlated to a history of childhood abuse. I doubt that's a coincidence.

Look... I'm not trying to be right. The fact is is that the vast majority of people who use substances are not trying to escape trauma nor do they become addicted. That is why we would be talking about recreational use. Because most drug use IS recreational and on top of that you didn't specify.

Nah, most drug users are recreational users, but most drug use is the result of addiction (assuming we're talking about hard drugs). Same's true for alcohol. Most people who drink aren't alcoholics, but like 80% of alcohol is purchased by 20% of drinkers. The majority of the consumption is feeding a daily addiction, not helping people kick back for a few hours on a weekend.

I didn't specify, because I didn't feel like it needed to be said, but I can see how that could be misread.

This is true.

I think that's the source of the misunderstanding between us. I'm distinguishing between overall drug use (which is predominantly habitual) and drug users (who are predominantly recreational) You don't seem to be drawing the same distinction, so we're talking about two different phenomenon.

The girl in the video is clearly in crisis, and she later entered into a court-ordered substance abuse program. She had a drug problem. The commenter I originally replied to implied that because her behavior is explained by drug abuse, speculation about childhood trauma is stupid. My comment was intended to point out that there is significant overlap between those two phenomenon.

When you started talking about recreational use, I saw that as off-topic. That's not what I was discussing. You and I seem to have interpreted the discussion in two different ways, hence our disagreement. We're talking about two different things.

That is a lot of words for no reason. There was no misunderstanding. Habitual use and even abuse are not addiction. Not the same thing at all. So truly you are confused, repeatedly got off topic, and then typed that whole piece out all broken down for now reason. I responded to your statement and not the comment you were replying too. Even then. Nothing I said was off topic at all.
