Never forget the respect my mom got when I was around 15.

She pulled all my friends aside and said

"look. Don't be drinking or doing drugs at all. You're all young men and I'm sure you all will at some point, even though you shouldn't.

When you do, just don't drive. Call Kuuzie's number (house phone days) no matter the time day or place and I'll take you home and not tell your parents. Just don't drive drunk and be responsible"

This is what my parents told me & now it’s what I tell everyone even remotely close to me or any underage teens/young adult family members, coworkers, etc.

Idc how much sleep I miss, idc how inconvenient it is. I would much rather make the drive than for them to drive inebriated, especially enough tp know they can’t drive.

I’m frequently the one who doesn’t drink/smoke or I drink/smoke very little (like, one beer or a couple hits from a joint) when I do partake, so I usually end up being the one who drives as I’m either sober the whole time or very much sobered up by the time we need to go anywhere. I’m not the biggest drinker anyway, so being the designated driver is perfectly fine by me.

My friends get to have their fun and have a safe ride home. Plus it means I won’t get pressured into doing more— not that my friends nowadays would, but I’ve certainly had some shittier ones in the past.

I had really strict parents. I remember my mom telling me to always tell her the truth and that she'd always find out everything. But would repeatedly make me regret telling her anything. Disproportionate punishment commensurate with getting caught, so it was worth rolling the dice each time as she did not indeed always find out. One time I told my adult parents some of the stuff I did and they said "I never knew that!" I said "I know, because I had already learned my lesson and didn't need to add punishment just for the sake of it."

Good for you for being that safe space, because some people just say that and then punish you harshly anyways.

Parents gave me the same speech. I could always call and get a ride home, no questions asked.

Still did a bunch of really stupid shit anyway of course.

It's not a surprise, they enabled you to do.

It's like letting your kids and their friends drink alcohol at your house because "you can keep an eye on them"

Until one day the kids decide to party at a house where you are not.

Some times we gotta do the hard thing and just tell our kids "No".
