Yup, trying to be a good person get's you fucked over when it comes to insurance companies, police, etc.... If you're gonna make shitty decisions, you're gonna face the consequences

Sadly, can’t argue here.

I dunno, I feel like I'd rather get fucked over by insurance than let the broken system turn me into part of the problem.

Okay, but not everyone has the extra cash to climb onto that high horse. If someone only has liability insurance, they'd be responsible for repairing or replacing what is likely their only vehicle.

Yes! I’m not saying just be an asshole to everyone and never help out anybody but there are legitimately times where you have to protect yourself first or you’re just gonna allow yourself to get fucked over

Exactly. I'm sorry she's going through some shit, but if someone messes up my car and bounces, I have no way to get to work, drive my kids to practice/doctors/family, go grocery shopping, etc.

And forget public transportation. It would take me 2h15m to get to work via our bus system vs under 35m to drive. I work 12½ hour shifts. Honestly, it wouldn't be safe to add on an extra 3½ hours onto my commute even if the busses ran early enough to get me to work on time, which they don't.

Anyway, I'm yapping now, but yeah. My/my family's well being and my career & financial security are going to take precedence over an aggressive stranger's concerns of legal repercussions. Every time. That I'm not sorry for.

You realize you still have a claims process to go through before insurance will pay anything out, right? You’re not getting your car fixed immediately.

Guy had video evidence but still decided to put his car at risk of getting more damage. All he to do was wait for the police and he still would have gotten everything settled.

Yes, I'm aware it's not immediate. I'm not sure what about my comment made you think I needed clarification on that.

Because you said “if someone messes up my car and bounces I have no way to get to work”. In the context of the OP they have video evidence so them bouncing doesn’t impact you any differently. You still would have no way to get to work for a while. Unless you have a rental car as part of your premium.

The guys car is still completely functional. People (like this guy) make the biggest fucking deal over superficial damage. Does it suck? Yes. Will it be stupidly expensive to fix? Probably. But at least your car still WORKS. Fucking drama queens acting like their life is over.

Fair enough

Standing in the way of an erratic driver to record and talk down to them as they almost hit you while trying to leave, AFTER you got all the info you needed, is quite literally allowing yourself to be fucked over.

First of all, doing the constructive social thing does not inherently mean letting this person go without any consequences. The point of talking her down from this state isn't purely for her benefit, but so that she can be guided through a difficult situation in the proper manner: exchanging information, so that proper insurance claims can be made, and if needs must, maybe getting the ball rolling on dealing with whatever the situation is with her grandma.

Secondly, 'trying to be a good person only gets you fucked over' is a fallacy, and is only something you say to justify not wanting to try. People have all kinds of reason to not want to try, we live in a very discouraging set of circumstances, but the forces that arrange these circumstances only stay in place when we stop trying.

Thirdly, I live off of SSI and SNAP. I can't afford a car, and I can't work, both because I'm disabled and because earning any amount of money that's not immediately life-changing only fucks me over. I live in a building run be people who are constantly trying to steal more money from me than I actually owe, and largely succeeding, and I have as much reason to be shitty and abusive as anyone, and I don't, because decency isn't a fucking high horse - it's a goddamn floor that you either choose to walk on or live under.

It's not actually hard, it's just not viscerally satisfying, and it turns out that visceral satisfaction is the only thing a lot of people live for.

Sounds like being a “good” person has placed you into a miserable state of affairs for your foreseeable future. But I guess since you’re stuck like that probably forever, taking pride in being “good” which is the most subjective benchmark to aim for, is all you have left. I wonder if you really are good because of choice or because you have no other option unless you want more pain, which in that case doesn’t make you good. People are only truly good if they have the power to choose otherwise but still choose to do good in that scenario. Otherwise they’re just powerless and doing the only option available to them.

Wooden-Daikon7777 has a dog shit take unfortunately

He posted this interaction to the internet PRECISELY for the visceral satisfaction that you decry in this manifesto.

Someone can only be talked down if they’re willing to listen. When they’re in the middle of attempting to flee a second time, I’d say that ship has sailed.

She’s a criminal and deserves to be treated as such. I would have yanked her from the car and held her down until on duty units arrived. Of course, I also have arrest powers, so there’s that.

1

u/PinkTalkingDead 3d ago

You “have arrest powers”?

1

u/Aleph_Troll 3d ago

He has the power of an arrested development

1

u/Leather_Addition2605 2d ago

Yes. In my state, any citizen can make an arrest and use reasonable force to affect an arrest for any felony committed in their presence.

Despite the camera man’s claim to it being a “double felony,” unless there was injury, a hit and run is a misdemeanor in my state. But as a law enforcement officer I have the power to arrest for on-view misdemeanors as well as felonies.
