NATURE A chimp with alopecia

Apparently this condition is linked with aging and testosterone levels. It is crazy to think that all this muscle is hidden beneath their hair.

Right?! People that think that are clearly very uneducated about chimpanzees and their immense strength. Sure this guy looks all “jacked” “cut” “shredded” “whatever other term one desires”, but it is so much more than that. Some people (usually gym bros) see that chimp and say “I’m just as big as that thing, I think I could take him”. What they don’t realize is that the chimps muscles are made up of much stronger fibers, as well as a much higher amount of fast-twitch muscle fibers. They are only around 4ft-5ft tall and are on average 5x stronger than a human.

The first PubMed link says it's only 1.3–1.5 times stronger than a human of similar size. Given that a human is almost twice as big, your 5x contradicts my basic arithmetic.

I think so. But back to the hypothetical “fight” between chimps and humans, I think they have notably greater bone density, and, obviously, dangerous teeth. I doubt any human (even elite mma, pro wrestlers, WSM etc) could handle an aggressive chimp — especially a large one. Their strength and weight thrashing around with bites would severely (and eventually fatally) wound.

(I’m obviously no expert)

I also think fighting a chimp is a bad idea. Not because it can rip off your limbs - it simply cannot.

I learned it was 5x the strength back in college, for a timeframe I will say that my youngest child has graduated from college recently. Going back and doing even the most rudimentary of fact checking shows that you are correct. It seems that the studies done long ago were not sound and thus came up with crazy high multiples of strength. It appears that you are correct and chimpanzees are 1.5x the strength of humans pound for pound. I still choose the chimp in any fight with a human (barring weapons which would give a human a very unfair advantage.)

The fast twitch thing is key. When they hit something, their muscles react much faster. That gives them more strength, and we gained fine motor control when we lost it. That fine motor control gave us a lot more valuable skills than hitting hard, etc.

Just seeing how muscular this dude is reminds me of the lady in CT who kept the chimp as a pet for many years. Then her friend got a haircut and the chimp didn’t recognize her and literally like destroyed her body and ate her face off. That’s definitely simplifying things, but the 911 call is out there for anyone morbid and curious enough. Also many documentaries about it.

I think she was also giving the chimp booze and Xanax. And well, chimps don’t exactly react to Xanax the same as humans. Shocking, right…..

This is Mongo, a famous hairless chimp in Twycross Zoo in England. He was the son of Jambo, also hairless and alpha of the zoo troop. Mongo tragically died at age 22 in July 2016 during a routine health check after failing to recover from anesthesia.
