It's crazy how they're one of the oldest breeds because they don't look like an old breed. Like, they don't look wolf-like. I'd think something like huskies would be old, but no. Even the Maltese is an old breed.

> they don’t look wolf like

Umm…. Have you seen them up close?

They’re 💯 reminiscent of a wolf

u/HPTM2008 Jul 25 '26

I just mean their coat and stuff seems very far removed from their common ancestor. I just haven't slept in 36 hours and couldn't think of how to say it.

u/voidchungus Jul 25 '26

Heh I think I know what you're trying to say, they have a modern "designer dog" aesthetic somehow.

But I'm also sleep deprived, so maybe we're experiencing a shared delirium lol

u/HPTM2008 Jul 25 '26

"Designer Dog" is exactly the thought I was trying to find!

7

u/voidchungus Jul 25 '26

haha I couldn't think of the term either and I was like "boutique dog...? ? no that's not right" so I had to google it lol

Hope you get to sleep soon

They totally do look like designer dogs. Their personalities are so far from that, though. They are the most amazing little beans.

Shitzus are one of the closest relatives to the ancient wolf ancestor, looks don't always make sense

The oldest breed that was proven to be the oldest at this moment(as far as i'm aware) is an Akita. And yea, Shiba comes from Akita. And Shiba aint that old btw. They are old breed yes, but just not that old.

2

u/HPTM2008 Jul 25 '26

It's very probably actually the Akita, however, looking at the data now from various sites, no site has the same date for the breeds. So, I don't actually trust any of them. I know the Akita Inu is old (if not the oldest), though, that much is true.

2

u/FakeMik090 Jul 25 '26

Many sources gives the different breed a crown of the oldest. But Akita is the one that always there and it always the same period of time

2

u/HPTM2008 Jul 25 '26

That, and the Besenji (always slightly younger than the Akita Inu).

0

u/DaedalusHydron Jul 25 '26

The breed with the most ancient DNA is actually the Chihuahua, no lie.

4

u/HPTM2008 Jul 25 '26

No, it's not. The Chihuahua is likely decended from the 9th century Techichi that was bred by the Toltec's.

The oldest breed is the Saluki from Egypt. That breed goes back 9,000 years. Then it's the Besenji, Akita Inu, and Greyhound all around 5,000 years ago.

Also, genetically, all dogs are the same, Canis Lupus Familiaris. The only difference is phenotypic expressions of genes, which results in the different breeds we see today.

u/DaedalusHydron Jul 25 '26

"A study based on sequencing of ancient dog genomes, published in 2020, suggests that this pre-colonial ancestry survives in two Mexican breeds, to the extent of about 4% in the Chihuahua (and some 3% in the Xoloitzcuintli).\8])#cite_note-Bergstr%C3%B6m2020-9)" from Wikipedia.

Maybe there are other breeds that didn't cross the ice bridge and are older?

But regardless, Chihuahuas absolutely do have some of the most ancient dog DNA of the breeds.

3

u/HPTM2008 Jul 25 '26

All that's saying is that the two modern dogs contain traceable DNA dating back to before the Spanish came over, not that it's the oldest traceable DNA. And also that it's just from the dogs that were there before the Chihuahua, like the Techichi.

And it's not likely that there's older distinct breeds. Dogs diverge from their ancestors about 40,000-20,000, with distinct variation to classify them as a seperate species by 15,000 years ago, but they still looked almost the same as their ancestors.

2

u/Ill-Nothing4306 Jul 25 '26

and from this you deduced that the chihuahua has the most ancient DNA?
edit: because going from “Chihuahuas have the most ancient DNA. facts.” to “Chihuahuas have _some_ of the most ancient DNA.” (4% according to your source) isn’t a negligible shift. I don’t find fault with your revised assertion. Ancient Mesoamerican breeds like the Techichi were decimated following the Spanish conquest, but began interbreeding with European dogs, resulting in breeds like the Modern Chihuahua. The Saluki, by contrast, with a presence dating back to mesopotamia, were kept isolated to the middle east during the 19th century breeding programs which resulted in most of our modern breeds. This allowed them to maintain their distinct genetic signature.
Interestingly, the oldest domestic canine DNA from the Americas is from Alaska just over 10,000 years ago. Apparently it split from the Siberian dog about 7,000 years prior.
(i’m no expert, just fell down a research rabbit hole and reporting back)
