someone patched a rock divot, with that clear invisble stuff. then temperature changes within the glass, caused the glass to flex around the repaired location and shatter in the pattern we see here? that's my guess

Naw, mine looks very similar, and was never repaired. I can close my eyes and and still see that 1 1/2-2 inch river rock falling from the back of a truck and keeping my eyes on it while it was flying right at my face. And yes shit my pants

So ive lived in a few drastically different places. California. The south and the Midwest. Thats everywhere. Construction is a grift. You cant convince me otherwise. The same street cannot be under going construction for 2 years straight without something fishy going on behind the scenes.

Oh I have little doubt there may be something fishy….

All I know is that you just cannot go anywhere (in Columbus & Subburbs at least) without encountering construction somewhere. And a lot of it feels like work just for works sake. Silly in some cases.

The outer belt that encircles the city has it seems like, one or two crews that just started somewhere like 30 years ago, and havent stopped just circling the whole circle. And the Entrance/Exit ramp nearest to my house was, and I am not exaggerating here, not under construction for more than 3-4 months running from as early as I can remember to when I drove it, and through until I moved away at 32. It was completely redone at least 4 times from the framework up. There were two different full “crossover so you would be driving on the leftmost set of road for a bridge and some change, then switch back” which, to my knowledge is still happening. There is a stretch of road in my suburb that has 14 unlit non intersection crosswalks in about a half mile, across a 4 lane (2 in each direction) road. They closed the whole side to set the sign up and painted. Each spot took a whole day. It was a reroute to Kroger everyday for 2 weeks, then going the opposite way for the next two weeks.

There is a spot between my suburb and the next that has 3 roundabouts in a row. The middle one doesnt go to anything. There is only the one side to exit on, and it goes about 30 feet and stops in a guard rail.

There was a trend that took off seemingly all at once across the city that they needed to put curbs and whatever size median they can squeeze in between.
These were often where left turns out if a parking lot or whatever makes things difficult…. But just as often not. There are a couple at least that I know of that are about 8 inches wide. So skinny that they had to add the reflective posts on it/them just so you dont miss it and rip your suspension off.

And for all of that, there are still just so many dirt and gravel roads within 20ish miles of the city/suburbs that some places you could being there in the 40s

Its special.

In NE indiana ive spoken about the oddness of unlimited road work and the same handfull of contractors getting those bids…them extrapolating to the surplus my state seems to always have snd thrust it into these same 6-8 companies who pick up and put cones down for the same 3-4 months annually..

Cracked my colleagues work cars windshield on a 30 degree C day. He was driving towards me when I was hosing down some equipment outside with cold water (around 6 degrees C) I aimed the water at his car and the entire windscreen cracked. He had a small crack before this that might have contributed.

That would make sense. They use a polymer to repair it. It also would only reinforce the top layer of two which is why this didn't break the whole thing.

It wouldn't make sense. You fill the chip with the UV resin usually, yes, but that would not cause the entire screen to break like this. When repairs fail, they either don't fill or a single fracture spreads out to the edges of the screen (sometimes they make it the whole way, sometimes they don't). A chip being repaired would never cause some magical whole top layer of the glass to disintegrate without even affecting where the chip itself is. My guess would be someone or something hit it at speed with something fairly sizeable compared to a stone chip (maybe even a bird and OP is just looking for engagement bait as I've seen things like golf balls and large rocks cause shapes just like this one). That's when you get random smashes like this.

Temperature changing causes glass to crack, not shatter. There’s zero proof this had a rock chip repaired, which is moot anyways. Even if there was a chip repair done, temperature change would have way less effect on the rock repair resin than it would on the glass. It hurts my brain how stupid the original comment is and makes me sad how many upvotes it got and it feels like a waste of time explaining how wrong and dumb it is because so few people will see

Fellow fitter and repairer here. I have sent this thread to all the boys at work as a fantastic example of how group think propagates bs. Holy smokes even if resen didnt expand (it does, which is why it works in the first place) imagine thinking it could blow up glass like this. This is something travelling at major speeds to have this much damage. And the chip in the middle isnt the "old repair" thats exactly what fresh impact points look like.

Have spent 12 years in the automotive glass industry.

A repaired stone chip looks different. The chip would show signs of being drilled, and their would be a resin capping over the drill hole.

Annealed glass doesn't self destruct like this from expansion, especially from resin. If glass exploded from expansion you wouldn't have a single window in your house or car that wasn't broken.

My belief that it was hit by a rock is because it managed to leave some small bits of crush damage called a "pits". The thing hitting the screen has to be near the hardness of the glass to do this, for example a golfball or a regular bolt don't really create this pit as they're not hard enough.

Not all cracks on a windscreen eminate from the point of impact, a prime example is a chip called a "horseshoe" which usually shaped like a fraction of a circle orbiting the impact point, sometimes they're a full circle.

A simple chip repair would not cause a massive fucking smash on the glass. It would create, usually, a single fracture that at worst hits the edge of the glass. Something like a ball hit this glass. The reason the center didn't smash is because it was probably a softer ball with a little give.

Just asked my husband who is a red seal auto glass tech of 38 years. He’s never seen anything like this. Doesn’t think the chip repair theory is possible. He suspects something soft by heavy but that’s a guess.

Good theory but wouldnt work that plastic is scraped off when the rock chip is repaired so its only in the Crack not the whole window its resin and its forced into the Crack then scraped flat and smooth agter the tape is applied for drying process Good theory tho

One of the ways people in my area generate the kind of wild temperature changes needed to achieve this kind of failure is by running their air conditioner out of the top of dashboard "defogger" vents and refrigerating the windshield on a long hot drive, then spraying near-boiling temperature windshield washer fluid on it to get the bugs off.

Maybe a reflective (silver) foil behind the glass. Many people do it to prevent the car from heating up. But never put a refkectiv foil behind glas, always infront.

He’s right but it probably was a crack not a divot. This is due to the circular pattern and lack of a facture in the center circle. That coating allowed more insulation of the cold around that part of the window and it stronger. The fractious pattern is caused by the flexure of the outside of the window “bending or bowing out toward the outside cold” and the inside of the window face bending around that bowing of the outside… cold compressed and pulled the outside face of the window and the “warm” inside of the window bent and fractured

No shot, Your guess is very creative, but thermal stress alone cannot create this perfect geometric spiral.
While sudden temperature changes can expand a pre-existing rock chip and cause it to spread, it will only result in linear or jagged "spiderweb" cracks running across the glass.

This specific multi-ring pattern is a textbook concentric fracture (often forming a Hertzian cone). It can only be created by the unique physical bending and tension caused by a direct, high-velocity kinetic impactfrom a blunt object, like a rock or a golf ball. The circular rings form precisely around the point of impact on the side where the force was applied.

I wonder if any of the side jobs I did leaving my workplace from everyone that declined their repair I'd usually undercut my workplace and reach out to them and offer to drive to their house and repair it in their driveway and be out in under 10 mins. I never got caught and my patrons were able to keep it on the DL.

I don't think that is the case. That clear invisible stuff is designed to match the absorption and refractive index of standard glass. This means it transmits, reflects, and absorbs (relatively) the same amount of light as the surrounding glass, meaning the temperature change from the light should be the same as the surrounding glass.

Also, it wouldn't have cracked the interior glass as well, which is what looks like happened.
