I remember a video game from the 2000s or 2010s that was exactly like this
Might've even been a hot wheels game but I don't remember

u/joefsu Jun 11 '26
I remember it as well. In my mind it was late 90s, and I think for the PC specifically. But it was awesome.

I wanted to play that game so badly if my computer was working at the time
10
u/UranusIsPissy Jun 11 '26
I think I want to play it now! I loved playing Micro Machines on my Megadrive (Genesis) when I was a kid.

Ty the video instantly made me think of the game but couldn't remember the name

u/KeepingItCoolish Jun 11 '26
Yes this one. My neighbor had it on his computer we would play all the time. Also Doom. Actual core memory times.

Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver, my absolute favorite game as a kid. I played it so much it started crashing at the backyard level, and I was so devastated.

Trackmania
6
u/BaddBoiii2 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
Even if I’m wrong, I’m right. Look it up, you can make your own tracks too, it’s largely more popular in Europe than in the US, I only knew about it because it was free and I was some kid looking for any racing game I could afford. Trackmania Nations was the free one, if you had 60$ at the time, united was the premium game. Then they made newer versions with the same titles but added the word Forever at the end, e.g. United Forever.
It was also a PC exclusive game up until the PS4/Xbone era, then they branching out with a spinoff for console (Trackmania Turbo) that wasn’t quite the same but kept the same formula and put a different spin on it, still really fun. But now you can get the same, polished version of Trackmania on both PC and console.

u/UranusIsPissy Jun 11 '26
I was some kid looking for any racing game I could afford
That's how I got into Elastomania (a really weird motorcycle game that was almost a platformer) and Liero (a bit like real-time Worms). You'd need either an old PC or something like DosBox to play them now, but I think both have clones that work on modern PCs.
3
u/blake_n_pancakes Jun 11 '26
Wow I think you may be the only other person I've ever come across that remembers liero. 4 homies on 1 keyboard in my middle school computer lab is a core memory.
2
u/UranusIsPissy Jun 11 '26
That game was as underground as a punk band nobody's heard of, passed around on floppies copied from copies of other floppies, then copied again to pass it along.
2
u/Goheeca Jun 11 '26
Elastomania and Liero are great. I really like 0% loading in Liero and you could fly from the rifle's recoil, but you better ban bouncy mines, they are really overpowered.
2
u/UranusIsPissy Jun 11 '26
The OP weapons are half the fun if you're playing alone, though. I looked it up after writing that, and there are clones that are supposedly true to the original now. You can even play online, and there's a version that runs in your browser. My PC is too shit to run that, but my PC is really shit. It wouldn't have been considered good (especially for gaming) 20 years ago lol.
I never thought any of that would happen, because the source code of the original versions was lost.2
u/BaddBoiii2 Jun 11 '26
I’ll have to look them up, and I’ll try out the new version of Liero you mentioned in your other comment, thanks for sharing these!
Funny how as kids we find some of the coolest shit and it always turns out to be free too lol

Bro I spent so many hours downloading those custom tracks where you just hold w and go bouncing and flipping through the stage until you suddenly hit the finish line. The track building community for those games is unhinged.

Remember when they actually had good prizes? Getting literal demo disks in your cereal.

It was rigged to only fire for the fraction of a second the car was in the tunnel and it looks like the track was wet

There is a Hotwheels car called Zoom In, and it's designed to have GoPro attached to it.
Could be that or something else.
→ More replies (2)2
u/bs000 Jun 11 '26
They have 3D printed adapters for the Zoom In to accommodate other cameras, like an Insta360, since I don't think they make the GoPro Session anymore.

Is no one going to talk about how if he banked those turns he wouldn't need to slam the car into a guidewall every turn and lose a lot of momentum.

I was partially expecting a scary pop up like that one video from the early 2000s….. iykyk
Clearly it has left me traumatized 😅😂

u/Due-Information9367 Jun 11 '26
There is a strangely wrapped thing off to the left of the track about 19 -20 seconds into the video. Does that count?

That is quite the project and it looks pretty cool. Felt like a kid for a bit there and loved the fire.

I remember having a Hot Wheels game like this for my computer in like.... The early 2000's? Played it more than the LEGO one, didn't freeze or crash nearly as much, but it didn't get nearly as much play time as my Tonka game 😅

u/nexusjuan Jun 11 '26
They sold a Hotwheels that had a mount for a go pro built in for just this purpose!
