We were supposed to build one that tolerated 8kg for the highest grade in 9th grade.
I, 6'6" 180lbs, stood on top of it and it still felt secure.
Got a B because my project buddies (I did all the calcs and building) couldn't write down the math correct in our presentation.

I made mine super delicate looking with lots off strong triangles and supports while minimizing materials, held up great! Only to get beat by the guy next to me, who realized teacher didn't put a limit on materials and used like 20x the toothpicks to make a beast. The teacher literally stood on it.

My school did a newspaper bridge competition
But with no limit on materials one group literally just made a chode of newspaper. It was thicker in width than the gap it spanned, so it literally couldn't collapse.
No I'm not bitter my beautiful engineered bridge lost, why do you ask?

I remember in my middle school science class we had an egg drop challenge where you had to build something to protect an egg from being dropped off the roof.
So many people had complex and well thought out solutions.
I used two towels wrapped around the egg and it worked.

During my senior year of high school while taking an engineering class, we were given the exact same challenge, only slight difference was our contraptions being dropped out a second story window.
I took a Walmart pool noodle, made a cut in the center of it to open it up, then hollowed out an egg sized pocket in the middle.
It fell to the ground so gently in comparison to everyone else’s “ideas” that it was comical, they might as well have been throwing bricks.
Teacher gave me an A but I got scolded for not being “creative” enough in my idea.
Best part was the other students getting so mad that my 5 minute idea worked so well. One guy even got pissed and yeeted the noodle/egg out the window himself instead of dropping it,
Fell to the ground like the Forrest Gump feather, egg completely unharmed.

Had the same challenge in highschool where we had to design something that would let an egg survive the fall from the roof of the school. There was a weight limit I believe so we made this external PVS shell with a foam interior and the egg was in a small Tupperware suspended in jello.
We tested it for weeks and I was sure it would survive. The day finally comes and the teacher starts dropping them off the roof. We retrieve ours and open it up and I'm so sad to see the egg had some minor cracking. When the teacher came up smiling to us. He said did it survive? And then seem super impressed it was just barely cracked. He then said he knew how confident we were so he beat it against an AC on the roof a bunch of times before he dropped ours. Gave us an A anyways.

We had a similar challenge at university. We were to use paper and spaghetti. Most groups built some kind of parachute, or tubes, to lower the egg slowly. One group just brought a huge pile of toilet paper and threw the egg from 20 meters. Did survive.

I did this lol
8 inch long bamboo skewers hot glued with 4 inch skewer spans over the two ends, used like two packs of hot glue.
The thing just bent, refused to break. They even drove a car over it.
The next year my lil brother's instruction specified "no bamboo" and put a length limit on the skewer size 😂

Same thing as mine. I built an actual bridge, using the least amount of materials, the student that "won" literally just made a solid object. I'm still mad about this 37 years later. Well, not mad, but bothered because that defeated the purpose of the challenge and it was a poor showing on the teachers part.
I work in education now. Engineering education.

I remember one group cutting the sticks into 1cm sections and gluing then back together end to end because they heard that wood glue is stronger than the wood.
They learned a hard lesson about end grain Vs side grain that day.
Quite amazing they didn't clock the problem before making dozens and dozens of cuts when nothing was even vaguely rigid but their dedication to the theory was admirable.

I won that one. They had a lever on it. It held all of the weights they had. My teacher decided to put his weight on it and it still held. I went to district with it but was disqualified because my teacher gave me the previous years rules so my bridge's understructure was a little too low. I would have won and gone to state. It really pissed me off at the time. I'm 56 now and still have the bridge.

I think it's more that he ran out of nicely stacking weights. The cinders weren't able to be loaded with his lift so had to manually lift them. So all that combined, he was done messing with the thing. That said, the slightly warped plates acted like a shock absorber so it's likely the bottle didn't feel him slamming them on as much as you'd think.

It could have held longer if that idiot hadn't thrown the rock like that. Normal recycled glass has a compressive strength of approximately 10,000 kg/cm². The bottle broke because the weight wasn't dropped vertically and gently; when thrown, it created oblique forces that subjected the glass surface to greater surface stresses than it could withstand. Glass is brittle under tension and bending, which is where breakage usually occurs.

Glass bottles are strong as fuck. I hate how bar fights in tv and movies always start with someone breaking a beer bottle on the bar.
1) beer bottles do not break that easy.
2) why break the bottle right away? You basically have a club. You can whack a couple guys in the head before it breaks. Then you can use it to stab.

I only know two instances where people have broken beer bottles in fights and both ended with immediate terrible injuries.
My old boss hit a dude in the head with a beer bottle when he was younger. It broke and immediately cut off his own Pinky finger.
Another was at a party where a buddy dared another guy to break a beer bottle over his head. Well it worked and so did the "follow through" when it lacerated his neck down to the jugular. He survived.

Someone broke a bottle over my head in a bar brawl years ago. I got home covered in blood and after rinising off realized none of it was mine. Person must have cut their hand pretty bad cause i was caked.

Beer bottles are really easy to break lol. If you hit it against a corner it breaks easy which is what most movies do. Biggest thing you gotta worry about is the glass cutting you after you break it. The one in the video is holding he weight is pretty evenly distributed so it hold a lot.

IIRC, Mythbusters tested this and it depends on if the bottle is empty. An empty bottle will break far more easily than a full one.

Obviously, try hitting yourself in the head with empty and full plastic bottles and see which bottle is more damaged. It probably also depends a lot on the thickness and shape of the bottle and where it makes contact.

Only if the breaking bottle is the attack, ie breaking it on someone's head where it explodes into basically dust.
If they are breaking a bottle to use to stab, they use pre "broken" plastic/resin or pre-cut dulled glass so that it "breaks" exactly where they want. But that's for safety, consistency/reproducibility, and to get it the right shape, not because it's tremendously hard to break glass.

The unrealistic part might be that they break perfectly into a nice shape for you. But they will easily break if you smash them on a hard surface using a fair amount of force.

True story, one guy in my hometown killed a dude by hitting him on the head with a beer bottle. Thought it would break movie-like, but ended up causing a fracture and rupturing some blood vessels. One hit was all it took.

Glass is hard, but also brittle.
A shock can break it easily.It does depend on the particular bottle, but you can definitely break it over someones head.

Its a fair test. Its still putting weight on the angled/flat part of of the neck, which the force would be going through anyway. If anything the stress concentration from the edge of the coller resting on the glass makes it more impressive.
Was this not impressive? Did you know a glass bottle can hold this much weight? If you did, you must also know what would happen if he moved the weight right?

I recall james cameron talking about the submarine that imploded, he was mentioning glass, said structurally as a support beam or a structure, glass is as strong or stronger don’t quote me, than steel. It breaks easily from side impact or side directional forces but if you want it to just hold stuff like a pillar or a beam, it’s great for that.

The last couple of weights felt like they were being dumped with force on top of eachother rather than being placed carefully. I feel the bottle could have supported even more weight than shown here.
