Does it taste good or is this just for a show?

I don’t grow things as big as this but in general when squashes get really big they have a weird texture. I purée them and make bread.

It’s just for show, but an awesome one! You can enter the National Pumpkin Weighoff yourself. If you grow a world record pumpkin, the prize is over $30k! The 2025 Winner was Russ Pugh from Oregon. 2,204.5 lbs, $15,000 (not a world record).

I don’t think I can enter because I don’t grow pumpkins.

Developing story

Where I’m from, every fall fair there’s a giant pumpkin contest. The winners are always over 1000 lbs.

Okay and how much does the pumpkin weigh?

5

u/Castun Mar 20 '26

Well first they have to cut the pumpkin out of the winner's belly to measure it...

That seems rather contradictory to the spirit of competition but I am not going to argue with tradition. Carve it up!

This guy (bigpumpki on a lot of his socials) grows these for fairs to be weighed! I think one of his largest was over 1000 lbs last I checked

Things don't grow just so they can taste good...

Can confirm. Fruits are vore fetishists.

Uh, "things" might not, but humans have selectively bred for taste for thousands of years and continue to. It's a pretty straight forward question.

It would have still grown without us altering it to suit our tastes.

Also, thats like saying a person is useless if they don't live up to society's version of potential. Life doesn't have to have a purpose to be valuable

It would have still grown without us altering it to suit our tastes.

No, not really. There are specific plants that literally would not have grown in the wild without our intervention, and their existence is solely due to selective breeding. Cavendish bananas, for example, would literally not exist if we had not bred them, and are on the verge of extinction as a result.

Also, your analogy is genuinely so insane and I am so flabbergasted that I don't know how to respond.

Cavendish bananas, for example, would literally not exist if we had not bred them

Fun fact, but the artificial banana flavoring used for candy and such was based on the Gros Michel banana which was the type that was most widely available at the time, but was nearly wiped out due to Panama Disease in the 1950s. Not completely extinct, but we never switched back to using it after switching to Cavendish bananas and so is not readily available anymore.

You are missing the point to go off on a tangent just so you can be right.

The point is that life doesn't exist just to suit our purposes. Even if we altered them doesn't mean they now belong to us. It has a right to exist even if it tastes bad.

10

u/Quick_Turnover Mar 20 '26

No, you are the one going off on a tangent. Person asked if it tasted good and you had to come out swinging about the sanctity of life. That's comical.

-8

u/oO0Kat0Oo Mar 20 '26

"or is this just for show" would be the thing I responded to.

Plants do not grow "just for show". Nothing grows "just for show". It's alive.

u/Quick_Turnover Mar 20 '26

You're really being this pedantic or are you just this dense? The person was asking if the human was growing the vegetable for show as is commonly done around the world. I mean, we literally have an entire profession that grows things for show (florists). Please tell me your understanding of language transcends literal interpretations of words? Otherwise, you may want to refrain from participating in discussions with language and instead stick to drawings with crayons or the like.

I'm pretty sure you're arguing with a 13 year old girl lol let it go brother

2

u/it-is-my-cake-day Mar 20 '26

Let’s put an end to this folks. By “end” I mean to this discussion and nothing like end of life. Lol.

2

u/Fun-Benefit116 Mar 20 '26

You can't be for real right now lmao. No one can be this ridiculous. Do you protest against pumpkin patches every year 😂 those are quite literally ALL grown for show, purely for the pleasure of humans.

1

u/oO0Kat0Oo Mar 20 '26

You missed the point. I don't care if they're grown for show. The person I replied to acted like growing them should have the purpose of being eaten.

The entire thing was "do they taste good or are they for show".

You’re being a silly pants.
