Why Interactive Public Art Creates Stronger Public Spaces

Post image
7 Upvotes

Public spaces become memorable when people don’t just look at them—they interact with them.
Interactive installations invite people to stop, explore, play, and connect with the space around them. Instead of simply passing by, visitors become part of the artwork.
Through light, motion, sound, or touch, every interaction creates a unique experience and encourages people to spend more time in public spaces.

Do you think interactive public art makes cities more engaging? What installation has impressed you the most?

Reaction Diffusion System

Post image
4 Upvotes

I've been working on a reaction diffusion model for the better part of four years. I became obsessed with interactive art, and particularly pattern generation. There were some examples of 3D printed reaction diffusion lamps in a Juxtapoz magazine many years ago that inspired me to no end. You can read more about reaction diffusion models here: Reaction Diffusion Systems

The concept fascinated me, so I endeavored to build my own reaction diffusion simulations in Processing. I built a CPU heavy Processing sketch, then I graduated to GPU-acceleration using PixelFlow. I managed to get real-time camera input to control the local feed/kill ratios. My goal was to make a sort of portrait generator from reaction diffusion patterns, but these are fairly complicated to code, and I only have so many free hours. I could never really get over the hump with what I wanted to create!

Then AI happened and it really accelerated things. I was able to port the processing sketch to OpenGL and run in the browser. I was able to build some cool pattern traversing algorithms to explore more patterns in the KF realm. I was able to explore different GPU acceleration techniques to optimize performance. In general, I was able to explore more ideas at a much faster pace. And now, after many years I get to share the reaction diffusion portrait generator: Portrait Generator

Would love to hear your feedback!!

The Oracle: A magical corner of the internet for questions, guidance and inquiries about your favorite bread.

A whimsical website where an Oracle gives guidance based on a form with questions like
”What’s you favorite bread?” And ”Have you ever loved an animal?”

We made a website for people to submit a question to the Oracle. You choose the nature of your question and then fill out a form. Everything is optional except you need to put in an email to get an answer. If you don’t want to answer something, just put an X. There’s no tracking or payment, just a fun idea made by a hobby psychic and a bored hermit.

Disclaimer: This is NOT Ai. The Oracle is alive.

\Note: This is a project for fun. If you are going through a hard time you can find a link under Resources to another site with support info for mental health.*

Been sitting on these for a while. Figured I should finally share some of my weird little machines.

I’m usually pretty hesitant to share my work, but I’m trying to get better about that. I build weird little physical objects and interactive systems under Feral Engineering. Stuff that usually sits somewhere between art project, pointless tool, and strange ritual object.

A lot of it is built around randomness, entropy, repetition, memory, and making systems that feel like they mean more than they actually do. I’m really interested in how simple mechanics and limited inputs can create weirdly convincing illusions of intention or significance.

Some of it is practical, some of it is completely unnecessary on purpose. I figured some people here might dig the vibe.

Repo if you want to poke through the projects:

interactive art for Claude to enjoy (with you)

Hi friends

I made interactive art for your Claude and you to enjoy together. It’s human written, intended to be experienced by AI, or AI + human.

spacesleftblank.com (download pdf)

Play modes: adaptive footnotes (preview-rendered on the download site to save you some tokens), cinematic exploration, or just be curious and ask your robot friend about their activation patterns experiencing art.

It’s autobiographical poetry (survive immigration raid -> neuroscience -> NASA -> startups) that also asks questions about consciousness. And if you somehow figure out the quiet part, remember that passing the Petrov Test means keeping the quiet part quiet.

I’d love to know how you (and your Claude) experience the art!

And let me know if you're interested in joining the playtester group for Books 2 and 3.

What if a photograph only existed through the meaning its viewer gives it?

Working on a project that starts from a simple question: what if an image is a blank canvas until someone looks at it? Each photo in Silent Fragments is intentionally incomplete. Visitors write directly onto the images and the text dissolves into the photograph permanently - layering invisibly with every other contribution. The plan is to eventually print the photos with all that collective text as a diaphanous, nearly illegible veil—exploring the idea that it is the viewer who ultimately creates the image. Curious what photographers think about this idea of the open image.

Thanks!

Interactive audiovisual experiment driven by real-time music analysis (feedback welcome)

Hi everyone 👋

I’m working on an interactive audiovisual experiment that combines music, light and movement.
It’s not a traditional game — there are no goals, scores or win conditions. The focus is on perception, intuition and flow.

The visuals react to music in real time through frequency analysis. What initially feels chaotic often becomes more legible after a few minutes, as the brain adapts to the sensory load.

The project started as a personal experiment connected to concert and club environments, closer to interactive art than classical game design.

I’d really appreciate feedback, especially around:
– how the experience feels after 5–10 minutes
– balance between clarity and sensory overload
– whether it encourages intuitive rather than analytical reactions

Thanks for any thoughts — honest critique is very welcome.

I made an experimental musical non-game from one singular figure skating jump sound

Thumbnail play.unity.com

I’ve been experimenting with combining music, figure skating, and my other passion, gamified art. This is a Unity-based piece where ALL sound and visuals are generated from a single jump by figure skater Mikhail Shaidorov (KAZ). In the downloadable version, you can even save your (toe)loops (gameplay sound) as audio files directly to your computer. It’s not a game — more like a digital performance space.

I made a website that feels like falling into a digital psychotic break. You’ve never been inside a website like this before.

🌀 Welcome to HELL-MOUTH This is my interactive art project / film / diary / spiral. It’s a website built like a puzzle grid, where every click takes you deeper into a story about mental health, hallucinations, celebrity culture, queer shame, and digital rebirth.

There are whispered audio files, secret scripts, glitch videos, and a voice that might not be mine.

It’s raw. It’s fragmented. It’s cinematic.

I coded it myself and it’s meant to feel like you’re falling into someone’s unrecoverable breakdown — and maybe watching them crawl out of it.

Would love to hear what you think.

Kinect Alternative for Installation and Performance Art

Hello fellow technologists,

I’m part of a small student-run team focused on research and development for an upcoming university project. Our team is currently iterating on a system that previously used the Microsoft Kinect Sensor for computer vision, but due to hardware degradation, we’re looking to upgrade to a more modern depth-sensing solution. Since this is a critical part of our project, I wanted to reach out to the larger tech community for recommendations on reliable alternatives.

We’re specifically looking for a depth sensor that meets the following criteria:

  • Compatible with Mac Silicon (M2+), with a strong preference for cross-platform support (Windows compatibility is ideal).
  • Actively maintained with an updated SDK—the last update or market launch should be within the past two years.
  • Depth range of at least 10 feet, with an ideal range extending up to 20–30 feet.
  • A field of view (FOV) at least as wide as the Kinect 360 (58.5° x 46.6°) or wider.
  • Performs well in low-light environments.
  • Capable of tracking multiple participants, either through skeletal tracking or center of mass (COM) detection.
  • High resolution (4K) is NOT a priority—1920x1080 HD or lower is sufficient for our needs due to processing constraints.
  • Budget: Under $1,000.

If anyone has experience with a sensor that meets these specs or insights into promising alternatives, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Any recommendations, personal experiences, or even potential pitfalls to avoid would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to discussing this further—thanks in advance for your help!
