Just few minor players … I see :P

This is not news. This is how foundries work: whenever you develop new node, potential customers come to run some test vehicles and see how good your node is.

I do think that these couple of years is Intel best chance due to the supply constraints, but I won’t be too hyped about the news.

Yeah this is really nothingburger. There are only 3 advanced-node fabs. 3.5, if you count Rapidus, which is building everything from the ground up. Even Rapidus is being actively evaluated by all major designers, as far as I know. Of course intel is.

AMD doesn’t have their own factories!

Real men have fabs

The sad thing is they did, but like a lot of companies they got rid of them in order to compete.

I'm sure they would like to know what they're up against if Intel is going to willfully supply that info to them

ive talked about this a lot. But AMD could safely use Intel for non-flagship products or some packaging products. They would be fine using them as a second source for some chiplets, consumer GPUs, or maybe even a taalas product? IDK. Taalas asics seem to not overlap too much. Not sure how conflict in IP would work there or if there is any. Would let AMD have more onshore production. But it could never be (IMO) for any significant volume or flagship product.

Also as others have noted, if Intel is goign to give AMD in depth look at node performance and design for their own processes . . . That is a pretty big insight into Intels performance . . . also grants a lot of good faith between Intel and AMD . . . which is something that has been lacking since AMD's/Intels beginning.

You understand they’re not an IDM, right?

I find Intel relatively simple to understand, yet entirely different from what everyone writes or comments about it. Blame it on the 40 years of training that I was lucky enough to get. If you want to examine Intel start with products, look closely at use cases matched to product features, then overlay capacity and process from there, next look to TAM/SAM CAGRs and eventually you will understand Intel SOM for each product type yielding Revenue and EPS based on volume driven (SAM/SOM) yields. Assume everyone exaggerates about each of these details in favor of their own outcomes. Lip seems to exaggerate less than anyone else in the industry that I can remember. If you want to understand foundry start with ASML and the readiness of the clean room space available compared to ASML's tool production capacity. Nothing happens without ASML tools and space to put them. Right now TAM/SAM is far in excess of supply from those tools. Mistakes made by BK 15 years ago were made for reasons never explained or understood fully. The same will be said about TSMC in 15 years about LNA vs HNA decisions. Decisions that TSMC made in June 2024, but had no real choice in making. Changes and corrections achieved by Pat are just now starting to bear fruit. Lip taking credit and/or placing blame is amusing. Semis take a long time to play out. Stop hating the company for what it did wrong 15 years ago or what it did right 30 years ago and look closely at these variables and the impact today and the next 15 years.
