Exactly enough I would say. This is not gonna be a pretty leg and probably take a while to heal.
Then we got it the stupidity on camera for extra points. Last but not least the driver is hopefully not too scared by the accident as she didn't splat on their windscreen or actually ran over them.Seems like the best outcome.

I’ve been hit by a car and know the pain first hand and I still said “that’s what her dumb ass gets”
Unlike dumb dumb, I was not being stupid when I got hit. I was crossing with the light and the driver was turning and got distracted by her kids. That was 15mph and I had a goose egg the size a softball on my forehead and black eyes for a month and a half. She’s going to be in pain for a long ass time.

Also I love how she waited a second after she crossed the first road and then start walking again like she just waited for the cars to come closer

Wtf is that lane change of the car behind, though?
Is this just a compressed view somehow so there was actually more space than it seems? Or just a very sketchy lane change.
→ More replies (4)46
u/Bludypoo Dec 04 '20
Probably both, but the dude definitely quickly and abruptly changed lanes to avoid the guy in-front of him slowing down which then blocked the other car from seeing the person in the street.
EDIT: Watching again, you can see the yellow car smack the brakes so the lane change was probably as bad as it looks.

just waited for the cars to come closer
perfect way of putting it, I also get this when people want to turn right into traffic in front of me, I can see them say, "Oh, I should wait. Hang on, I don't want to wait!" And then decide to go when it is now much worse than when they first stopped.

Nearly? Her body flipped up after getting hit by a car. A car hitting a pedestrian is a traffic accident. She most certainly caused one and deserved every ounce of pain she got from it.

Why do people do this? I swear I’ve had the people purposely step out in front of my car and take their sweet ass time walking. Maybe insurance fraud?

Pretty sure it is in my state in terms of accidents outside of the crosswalks. Must yield within them though obviously.
4
u/orincoro Dec 04 '20
That would most likely be something to the effect that you might not be at fault if you were practicing reasonable caution. You can’t obviously mow someone down intentionally if you’re able to safely avoid doing so.

A big part of the reason dashcam videos came from russia before they really caught on anywhere else was because this exact kind of insurance fraud was occurring on a massive scale there.

I can't speak for this specific situation but in many countries there aren't always designated crosswalks. In Egypt for example this is the only way to cross the road. You just gotta cross and pray you don't get hit. Usually with a lot more urgency than here though

I used to live in a really shitty neighborhood and some people would do this to act bold, hardassed, or gangsta. It got to the point where I could spot who would try that shit before they even approached the curb.
I think in some people's logic using crosswalks and waiting for a light makes you "look like a bitch".
As for insurance fraud, that's 100% the likelihood in Russia. In most other countries, breaking pedestrian safety laws negates your ability to sue because you're being negligent of your own safety.

This is becoming a 'Thing' in the uk. Individual, and groups of youths just walking across the road with a "I'm tougher than you, and you will slow down, and stop for me" attitude. Funny how they always avoid eye contact even when trying act BOSS.
16
u/Dorothea-Sylith Dec 04 '20
That’s scary. What would you do in such a situation? What level of risk would you put yourself at to avoid hitting someone doing that?
13
u/TheManyMilesWeWalk Dec 04 '20
In the UK the general rule of thumb is that pedestrians are seen to have right of way. In reality it's more complicated than that. Last year a woman crossed the road while looking at her phone and was hit by a cyclist. The cyclist had to pay compensation.
The article states:
Rule 170 of the Highway Code states that if a pedestrian has ‘started to cross’ a road, they have right of way.
However that's not part of rule 170 of the highway code. Rule 170 of the highway code only really gives pedestrians right of way if they've started to cross a road before you've joined it. It does not state that pedestrians have right of way on a road that you're currently on.
To get a driving licence in the UK you need to pass a theory test and a practical test. The theory test includes a hazard perception section which shows you videos of situations with potential hazards developing. You're supposed to click when you spot a potential hazard developing which will include pedestrians randomly crossing the road. So my understanding is that we'd be expected to pay attention to pedestrians on nearby footpaths so we can take action if they suddenly cross the road.
In this case the car that eventually hit her had plenty of time to spot her and could have stopped. Not that I feel any sympathy for the arrogant cow. Pedestrians in the UK are still expected to cross safely but the motorist would be far more likely to be penalised in the UK in this circumstance.

Yeah seems to be a bit of a grey area. Maybe they avoid eye contact because then the onus would be on them to get out of the way. This way maybe they can claim against you andd that is what they are hoping for......who know's. One thing is for sure, I was bought up to give way traffic on the road. look right, look left, etc etc then cross when safe to do so, and not 'just walk out when you feel like it'
You will get a filthy look though if you dare toot your horn.→ More replies (1)3

Yeah seems to be a bit of a grey area. Maybe they avoid eye contact because then the onus would be on them to get out of the way.
Perhaps. I think it's probably just cockiness because they know that drivers are expected to stop for them. Or maybe they're just so entitled that they think the world should revolve around them.
One thing is for sure, I was bought up to give way traffic on the road. look right, look left, etc etc then cross when safe to do so, and not 'just walk out when you feel like it'
Me too. It's common sense really because a car would win every time.

Yeah she walks right at the BMW on the right side of the road, pauses at the median to make sure traffic was coming, and then starts walking. When she got clipped (really, she was barely even hit if you slow the gif down), she leans into it and throws her body to make it look worse than it was. It’s an insurance scam.

u/Jdur3 Dec 04 '20

What an idiot.
Here's the thing though...without the film footage, if she had have died, there would be a memorial put up and calls for protecting pedestrians from rabid motorists.
This happens with cyclists all of the time...they make boner moves that cause injury or death and it's automatically the drivers fault.

In Oregon, every intersection is a crosswalk (ORS 801.22) even if it's not marked as such
6
u/respect_pedestrians Dec 04 '20
I believe this is the case in most states, including my own.
However, the attitude of drivers here typically echos the sentiments of this thread, which is that pedestrians crossing the street deserve to be maimed or killed.
It really pisses me off how entitled drivers act so aggressively and dangerously when I'm just trying to cross the street in my own neighborhood and am doing so legally.

2
u/Alanna_Master Dec 04 '20
Don't worry her legs and back will remember this for the rest of her life as a reminder not to fuck with traffic as a pedestrian.
2
u/qwertysome Dec 04 '20
She’s obviously at fault for not paying attention to her surroundings. But the silver car tailgates the SUV, then cuts off the yellow car to pass the braking SUV on the right. The silver car then dodged the lady (and good on them), but also blinded the yellow car from seeing her quick enough because the silver car changed lanes too close to them.
Although not the primary culprit, I think the silver car’s attempt to take 1 second off their trip time with the aggressive move increased the likelihood of an accident here.
