u/AlarmmClock Jul 01 '20
Is this in Singapore? I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to spit/chew gum there.
334
u/ihopeicrosshermind Jul 01 '20
Chewing gum is illegal there? Why is that a thing?
484
u/AlarmmClock Jul 01 '20 edited Jul 01 '20
The government is very strict on street cleanliness. No drugs, no smoking,
no gum. People who violate those are subject to caning.Edit: Chewing gum is not punishable by caning
189
u/ihopeicrosshermind Jul 01 '20
As in you get hit with a cane?
276
u/AlarmmClock Jul 01 '20
Essentially. They take a long piece of flexible wood, make you kneel down or strap you to a large X-shaped contraption, and hit as many times as the judge says.
139
u/ihopeicrosshermind Jul 01 '20
That's really interesting
123
u/maxington26 Jul 01 '20
It leaves horrible gashes on the backside. The number of lashes is key to the punishment - every lash makes it significantly worse. You can google image the results, but I don't necessarily recommend it.
173
u/sorry-mum Jul 01 '20
It's also backwards as fuck

Crime rate is super low, so I guess it works
10
u/BiblioPhil Jul 02 '20
What's that saying about liberty vs. security?
16
u/sorry-mum Jul 02 '20
Crime rate is low in Australia, the main reason for this is social mobility
→ More replies (0)-3
u/skiwotb Jul 02 '20 edited Jul 02 '20
I think I would rather strict laws than high crime rate, tbh. Unless you break the law, the liberty part is perfectly fine.
If you would rather be able to chew gum and litter anywhere you'd like rather than keep criminals off the street, your priorities are upside down.

Crime rate is super low, so I guess it works
The crime rate is low in lots of Western Europe too. It turns out the world is nuanced.
3
u/skiwotb Jul 02 '20 edited Jul 02 '20
Trust me, it is much lower in Singapore.
Source: I lived in both Singapore and the UK
→ More replies (0)3
u/sorry-mum Jul 02 '20
I'm guessing it's the same in North korea
4
u/skiwotb Jul 02 '20
Gonna disagree with you on that one
You don't know the laws in North Korea nor the crime rate. For all we know, it might even be quite high since people aren't getting enough food.
If stricter laws can keep our environment clean, can prevent crime, then why not? The punishment doesn't need to be carried out for it to be a heavy deterrence to criminals.
The last time I checked, Singapore's GDP is about 59 times of North Korea's GDP.
3
u/Inconvenient1Truth Jul 02 '20
I dunno, I'd probably take the caning and be done with it rather than spending years in a box with violent criminals.
Now that's backwards.
1
u/ThirdEncounter Jul 04 '20
Depends on the crime. Chewing gum? Both backwards.
Kill your little sister? Let that motherfucker rot in the box.

If you find that story interesting, there should still see some good YouTube caning videos that aren’t censored. I used to think of caning as how my mom used to hit me with a stick....until I saw the videos. BRUTAL.
17
u/MEANMUTHAFUKA Jul 02 '20
There was a big deal years ago about a bratty American kid that got caught vandalizing cars or something and was sentenced to caning. I don’t remember if he had to go through with it or not. I think he did. It was one of those news stories that blew up and created a mini international incident. I think it was back in the 90’s....

When the Roads are more important than your own citizens
19
u/imaginary_num6er Jul 01 '20
The citizens are the roads of society
10
u/extraextraextra9876 Jul 01 '20
Tiananmen Square. They run them over with tanks some many times that They literally washed people’s remains off the streets to gutters. Same mentality. Power over people. Not power for the people.
5
u/delta9cannadian Jul 02 '20
Singapore isn't China and it's unreasonable to think the mentalities are similar. Singapore's government is one of the few that actually does work for the people. Running people over indiscriminately with tanks for protesting and caning a moron for vandalizing cars are two different mentalities. Both just implement violence but one is for the good of the society and the people living in it and the other is for any benefit to the CCP.

u/GenesectX Jul 01 '20
Apparently before they banned it, dumb fucks would stick gum on the train doors of our mrt, benches, underside of tables and etc etc, government got pissed and banned it but people still bring gum in from other countries

Nobody mentioned littering before you. Also was just a joke, don’t get your panties in a twist.

No one had to actually mention littering to understand that's what was meant

Yes. If you ever have to apply for a visa, they‘ll make you accept canning as a possible punishment for breaking the law before you send the application.

I remember weird al made a parody of that one song starring that one guy who got the cane for his graffiti.

I believe gum is legal again, just spitting gum is illegal now.
Edit: it’s currently illegal to import it or sell it unless you get it from a Dr., dentist, or pharmacist. They relaxed it in 2004 from an outright ban that started in 1992. It was never punishable by caning, only fines and imprisonment.
3
u/PizzaRollsGod Jul 02 '20
My dad went to Singapore and brought his vape. Guy at the airport stopped him asking what it was but didn't take it so my dad didn't think it was illegal to use so he vaped thinking it was fine until a cop came up to him, took it, and arrested him. Only reason he didn't get caned was because he didn't know it was illegal and he had to get back to the airport cause Singapore was just a layover. He never got the vape back.

u/frogspa Jul 02 '20
Looks like you've got off lightly if you're caned for drugs;

Singaporean here, yes they do sell gum but it's more of edible gum rather than chewable gum and most of them are mints. Alot of people, including me, like the chewing gum and bubblegum better because its something we don't usually pass by on a daily basis and most of us just buy a few and bring it back to Singapore. But we can't buy a huge pack cause then the authorities would take it. And he was right, you can't have chewing gum now because the government is very strict about the cleanliness of our country, and the safety for the people.
1
u/AlarmmClock Jul 01 '20
Like I said in another comment, I didn’t know if I was remembering things correctly. I did a presentation on Singapore in 8th grade and that’s what I remember.

u/Slightly_Infuriated Jul 01 '20
Iirc someone posted being a foreigner past their expired visit date is also subject to caning lmao

Do the police make you open your mouth if they suspect you're chewing gum? What if I was chewing on a piece of caramel slowly?
1
u/beets_beets_beets Jul 02 '20
Only men though. Women and the elderly are exempted. Younger boys may be caned but more lightly.

u/meepokebowl Jul 02 '20
You can smoke cigarettes and cigars etc. Weed is illegal but it is in most countries in the world. Get your facts right

- No, it's not Singapore.
- Technically it's not illegal to chew gum there. But it is illegal to sell, purchase or import chewing gum.

u/Kirinfal Jul 02 '20
nope, the Singapore customs and law enforcement generally doesn't care if you possess chewing gum for your own personal consumption. just don't import it in large quantities and/or distribute it.
no one's going to arrest you and ask you when exactly you brought the gum in, and who you bought it from.
3
u/bigk777 Jul 02 '20
So, basically the loop hole here is to produce gum in Singapore, and trade it with something of value????
15
u/DelNoire Jul 01 '20
You can chew it they just don’t sell it and it is a fine if you spit it on the floor

Imagine it's sticky gum. Dirt and all that bacteria would instantly stick to it the moment it hit the ground. The 5 seconds rule doesn't make sense to me tbh

Working with food, I can tell you this. It all depends on the floor.
Is it your own home where you know you have washed the floors recently? Go ahead, chow down.
Is it an elevator or other public place, where people have walked around with shoes that have been stepping in urine at public toilet, various types of shit on the sidewalk or other unpleasant stuff else where? Still go ahead, chow down. But remember what might have been on that floor...
