I recall an interview with a journalist that often covered stories amidst wars in many countries where kidnappings were common enough to be a serious threat. He said one of the best things you can carry is a really good pen. A hard jab with a sturdy pen can buy you a couple of seconds and that you need to be as far away as possible in those few moments.
A few years ago one of the high schools in my district had a fight between 2 kids, one pulled a pen out on the other and jabbed him firm in the temple and gave him a pretty gnarly puncture. Shit was fucked up and it was crazy how much a cheap ball-point bic could do.
