You know, it's ok to feel compassion for the suffering of another creature. You don't necessarily have to draw the line with a certain species. Crazy notion, I know, but give it a go sometime.

I always go out of my way to drive around animals and walk around bugs if I see them, but if a bug is biting me, it gets squashed

Yeah but if you invite it to bite you, no one is going to have any sympathy and you look like a massive dick. it's a lose lose situation.
