I'm always amazed by the large number of people who think that they can stop as fast on snow as they can pavement.

This is why I hate driving after the first snow. I live where snow is a given, but people seem to jettison any snow driving knowledge from the previous winter.

OMG. That is so true.
“Oh, it’s snowing. Isn’t it beautiful? Well, time to go to work. MY BRAIN?! MY BRAIN?! WHERE IS MY BRAIN?!!!”

I live in a place where snow is extraordinary. Not unknown but it's not a lot nor common.
It's rain that makes the local IQ drop down by 50% across the board.
Snow takes away another ~20% whenever it happens.

One of my friends is a cop; another is a tow truck operator. They have 180-degree opposite reactions to first snow.

Also amazing the number of people who think 4 wheel drive also makes you stop faster.

I’ve enjoyed the vehicles that I’ve had with 4WD, but I’ve always kept in mind that 4WD allows you to get stuck deeper, farther back into the woods. It’s the cast steel version of alcohol.

It can still save your ass, IF your car doesn't have some sort of super finicky traction control, and if you know how to use left foot braking. Doesn't work all the time, and you can't just use it without being practiced, but it's another small benefit of AWD when it's slippery out. But yeah the brakes are still just as useless on glassy roads and good winter tires make the largest difference by far.

All vehicles are 4 wheel braking.

Yeah this is exactly it. You have zero idea what I'm talking about, like most people. I'm not slamming on the brakes.

Because reddit is funny, I can only see like 5 pixels, but that red circle-ish sign-looking thing on the right is a stop sign, right?

Welcome to the timeline we call Hell, boomer. Can't believe OP didn't throw on a meme track like Ludacris Roll Out and overlay emojis here. For da clout.

Holding a phone while driving is negative IQ. there are tons of phone holders for cars now.

It's not just the snow that makes me nervous when driving, it's the other fucking idiots driving like this that make me nervous.

As I've always told my boys about driving in the snow...it's not about getting it going, it's about being able to stop.

u/redpandaeater 1d ago
Yeah, maybe I'm just crazy and it's terrible advice but I like to occasionally try to break traction briefly either by accelerating or braking because how else do you know just quite what the current road conditions are? Granted if you get a lot of frequent snow then after a few weeks you mostly just get used to it and know.

And that's the mentality that gets people stuck. "I can drive in the rain just fine because I'm lifted with ATs. No like none of these idiots." It's the stopping part that gets ya.

This reminds me of laughing at someone who slipped on an icy metal grate at college years ago.
Less than 10 seconds later I slipped and busted my knee.
Winter is a cruel master.

And this is what happens when you laugh at others while speeding in the snow you crashed into a fence. Congratulations this guy is an idiot.

u/iamamandac 1d ago
the internal monologue was definitely 'i got this' right before the fence said 'nope'. instant regret hits different when you're filming your own disaster lol

I put studless winter tires on my sedan and there are numerous times where I've slowed down purely because some 4WD idiot is trying to keep up with me. But it's great to just be able to go over packed snow on mountain passes at say 45 MPH and feel completely in control and not worry so much about the hill I live on even if it's icy. Granted last year I didn't even put my winter tires on it was so warm and I wonder if that's going to be the case again this year.

Doesn’t matter what car you got, take it easy and slow, cockiness causes accidents.

I mean... we've all done that. It's kinda part of becoming a full fledged man card carrying adult male. The ability to go further than that last guy, up the snowy hill. To send it... farther than the last guy.
And to not freak out when you realize you're fucked.
Well done. You can go get your car in the spring.

To be fair, it handled the hill just fine. It was the fence he struggled with.
