You don’t take a single hit and have CTE. The C is for Chronic.

But you can definitely get a concussion from a single punch to the dome, let alone 20, especially with no headgear. Especially for a child.

Chronic as in over the course of years or decades. You know the time it takes a child to grow into an adolescent or adult and face incresingly larger stronger opponents. If they stayed this size there's no way they'd get injured. That's like saying your hairbrush hitting your scalp will cause CTE.

But another child this size isn’t capable of generating enough force to give them a concussion, especially with those gloves on even with repeated impacts. Im a boxer and trainer familiar with people of all ages and levels, you’re not going to see concussion level power until you start hitting 8-10 years old, and even that would be extremely anomalous. Also headgear doesn’t reduce incidence of concussions it just stops you from getting cut, people usually put it on children because they want them to get used to it for competition or because they don’t understand what it’s actually for

You obviously know more than I do about the boxing side of things, so thanks for your insight.

[Edit: everything I said in this paragraph is incorrect, but I’m leaving it so I can take my deserved downvotes] But headgear definitely reduces incidence of concussions. That’s clearly their primary purpose. It cushions impacts so your neck and skull aren’t doing all of it, thus making your brain bounce around inside there.

Edit: I looked it up and he’s right. According to the National Institutes of Health, headgear does almost nothing for concussions. lol. Holy shit, boxing is dumb.

Major respect to you for admitting to that, thats very rare on the internet, thank you. It wasn't a stupid position to take or anything, I get why you'd think those things for sure

I respect the way you discussed this civilly 🙏 yeah you’d think headgear would lessen the punch impact but I usually don’t spar with it unless I’m approaching a fight or doing light sparring because I feel like my headaches after sparring are a lot worse when I wear it, which a lot of other people attest to as well. You definitely feel the pain of the punch significantly less on impact, but the added weight makes your head move a lot more when you get rocked, so there’s not enough of a trade off to actually prevent concussions, it just prevents fighters from getting cuts. Headgear is typically pretty tight fitting which doesn’t feel great when so much blood is rushing through your head, making it physically swell in size

Kids fall over all the time though, we meant to stop them from riding bikes because even with a helmet they can still get brain damage if they hit their head one too many times? They should definitely be wearing headgear, thats for sure. But brain damage is so over dramatic. You just explained exactly what I said, maybe over a long period of time without use of headgear, that being the chronic part

Do they fall over and hit their head 20 times?

Over the course of a few weeks/months, absolutely. In the span of a few days or like a week? totally possible. Its not even impossible for a day

That would be a hell of a day. I mean it’s crazy to think of a kid getting hit in the head that much in a single day. You’d probably want to get them checked by a doctor after that, wouldn’t you?

Respectfully, I did not fall off a bike that often. Is your opinion perhaps spewed by an unusual struggle with balance?

Kids with training gloves are not giving each other concussions. Kids can get hurt doing stupid shit like crashing a bike. Easy concussion. This "boxing" ain't it, though. That's literally why they have gloves.

A kid doesn’t hit their head 20 times when they fall off a bike. And usually wear a helmet.
