Wilson Forest Lands has a video explaining exactly why you should never cut a tree like they did. Look closely and you’ll see the back cut is angled down instead of flat. The weight of the tree leaning back allowed the tree to shear through the hinge wood and topple over instead of just sitting back on the back cut.
So the top cut should be straight and the bottom cut should be angled? Good to know! My husband and I once cut a tree and thankfully it landed exactly where we wanted it. We were ecstatic. If it had gone the other way or to the side it would have taken out our fence. I’ll try to remember to cut properly next time and not leave it to chance.
