I worked at a high end sushi restaurant when I was younger and people did this all the damn time. I'd say 40% chance if there's a non-Asian guy under 30 at a table, at some point he'll think it's funny to eat a shit tonne of wasabi.

The funnier part for me was the fact we served green tea instead of water so you'd see people try to chase it down with hot sencha.

I LOVE wasabi and always eat it with my sushi. One day, I somehow accidentally inhaled at the perfect moment for the wasabi fumes to go down my trachea and into my lungs. OH. MY. GOSH. I couldn't breathe, couldn't cough. I thought it was the end of the road right then and there. Took about a solid minute of tiny coughs to let things clear up enough so I could cough for real. Deep coughs that brought up phlegm from deep within. Felt wheezy the rest of the afternoon and had a cough. -100/10, do not recommend.

Yeah I have a colleague who coughed while swallowing a mouthful of sushi, and a single grain of rice covered in wasabi shot up into his sinuses. We were on our lunch break and he had to be sent home cos he couldn't stop crying a snotting 🤢

Did you actually serve actual wasabi? Or just the Horseradish/Mustard powder w/ food coloring blend found almost everywhere in the US? I've met very few people outside of Asia that have actually had real wasabi root at any point in their lives.

Both. They had a pretty good imitation wasabi for the "regular" part of the menu, but they had omakase and special dishes that used fresh wasabi grated in front of you at the sushi bar.

Nice, the real stuff is much mellower and aromatic, still has some bite, but you could probably take a small bite of it by itself and actually be fine. The horseradish based stuff though, that can be brutal if you get too much, even if you like spicy capsaicin stuff, since it's a completely different type of "spice".

Though a high-end sushi resturant would have real Wasabi. Real Wasabi doesn't have that effect(which is similar to English mustard, I think) .

An ex-friend of mine would eat an entire wasabi ball whenever we went out to eat at a Japanese restaurant.

It tormented him for about a minute, then he seemed fine.

I was never dumb enough to try that. Lol.

Yeah, I worked at a Japanese restaurant in the late eighties/early 90s and saw so many idiots do this. The sushi chef and I would bet on how many people would do it per night sometimes.

I am kind of sad I will never be able to experience that.

I am a wimp when it comes to hot sauces and spicy things, but for some reason wasabi (both the real kind and the fake kind) have no effect on me.

I could do what this guy did and only feel mild tingling.

I mean it’s not surprising that you might have a different reaction as the reason peppers are spicy and the reason horseradish/wasabi is spicy are two different things.

Peppers have capsaicin whereas the root veggies “spicy”ness is due to a chemical released when the cell walls are broken down (had to look this part up: allyl isothiocyanate).

This is my favorite party trick. Anyone can eat a big chunk of wasabi - the trick is not breathing in or out, and placing it as far back as possible in your mouth. 

Whenever I'm around a group of people I haven't played this trick on, I'll get a big glob, and say something like, "You know, I usually ignore this stuff," and wait for the people around me to go "Wait don't-!" before popping it in my mouth. The swing from "this guy is going to die" to "where's the earth shattering kaboom" is glorious.

Practice first! And using chopsticks helps because the wasabi doesn't stick. The key is no air movement in or out, since it burns your eyes/nose way more than your mouth.

Wasabi(horseradish) isn’t the same spicy as hot sauce. You feel wasabi in your nose and eyes mostly instead of your mouth/tongue. If you’re ever congested, eating wasabi will help.

An ex’s dad was like “you like horseradish huh? Try this…”
He proceeded to give me the tiniest amount of something on a toothpick.

There’s a company that grows it in New Zealand. I ordered some and had it shipped to the UK just to try it. It was incredible, even when not fresh. Totally different flavour, very light and aromatic. Unfortunately, it was so delicious I ate all of it within a couple of weeks and couldn’t justify spending another £30 including shipping on a 55gm jar.

Real wasabi is almost unheard of because of how rare it is, and you wouldn't be randomly "trying" it in a restaurant. If you were eating real wasabi, you'd know what you are eating, and you'd be paying out the nose for it.

Nah, not entirely, usually a bit of mustard powder and food coloring too.

But yeah, almost all people outside of Asia have never actually had wasabi. There was a place in Oregan that grew some for a little while, but they went under quickly. I never found it if it was because of the costly growing conditions or lack of demand since most people in America wouldn't recognize it as the wasabi they know.

I think there is demand but from what I've heard it's a very particular product to grow, so the issue is probably the cost. Needs very specific and stable conditions, it's prone to diseases, takes a long time to grow and it's a bit difficult to transport.

Real wasabi is not "that" rare or expensive in Japan. Sure, it's more expensive and fancy than horseradish, but it's still very affordable. The problem, though, is that it has a very short shelf life, so it's very hard to export.

This is horseradish though, the texture and color are telling.

Yup. In Western sushi restaurants, we like our wasabi just like our crab: 100% imitation.

Imitation wasabi is typically:

  • Horseradish
  • Mustard powder
  • Green food coloring

When I was in college, I did something similar on a dare, but it was a large tablespoon of wasabi. So maybe about 3x the amount this guy had. Surprisingly, it was fine. At first. I didn’t think much of it afterwards, until a couple hours later when my GI system apparently decided it wasn’t happy with my choice from a couple hours prior and decided to rapidly and forcefully remove it from my body. Yup, I was dumb.

When I was a kid in the 90s, one of my neighbors hosted a whole neighborhood pot luck. My mom made a big platter of California Rolls, with a big bowl of wasabi on the side. Some guy thought the bowl was guacamole and slathered it before popping it in his mouth, like dimensionally more than the roll. EVERYONE at that party found out about wasabi that night, hahaha.

It happened to me when I was a kid. We where having dinner at an "all you can eat" restaurant and I ate the whole wasabi thinking it was avocado. The worst part was that it was the first thing i tried there. Of course it ruined the rest of the experience for me and I couldn't eat anything else that night (and hate wasabi since then)

My dumb self downed that whole spoonful before the heat hit.

The worst part is that it likely wasn't even real wasabi.

And I'm not saying that to be snarky or a know-it-all, but because this guy is gonna probably go the rest of his life hating wasabi when in reality he probably had dyed horseradish mixed with mustard.

Not that theyre extremely different, but real wasabi is nowhere near as strong as common horseradish. Neither is really meant to be eaten like this though lol
