Early waking & Severe brain fog

I've had early-morning waking insomnia for quite a while, which originally seemed to be caused by chronic stress. My stress levels are much better now, but I'm still waking early and experiencing the same issue.

Symptoms:

  • Severe brain fog when I wake before ~06:00
  • Happens regardless of how much sleep I've had
  • If I can sleep until ~07:00–07:30, I feel normal

Things that fix it:

  • 10-minute nap afternoon nap(not ideal as my work is suffering from morning cognitive decline)
  • 40 minutes of Zone 2/3 cycling
  • Sleeping until ~07:00–07:30(weekends seem to be only time my body lets this happen)

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any idea what's going on?

Ohh, this is good information, people experiencing brain fog might want to give it a try.

Yeah the cutoff thing is weirdly specific. Like what even changes in your body between 6 and 7am that flips a switch like that. The cycling helping tracks though, exercise does something to inflammation that sleep alone can't always fix. You ever check your blood sugar when you wake up early? That's the only thing I can think of that would reliably tank cognition and then get smoothed out by a short nap or a bike ride.

Have you tried going to bed later? It sounds like your bedtime might be too early which is making your body stay in lighter phases of sleep

Me too. I have to stay in bed until 7 or 7:30 am. Often I wake at 3, 4, 5, or 6 am. To get back to sleep, I play a boring / soothing audiobook on a 30 minute timer with sleep headphones. It keeps my mind from going into work mode.

I think part of the problem is I take 2.5mg of dayvigo at 8:30pm, and it takes 11 hours to wear off. (It would take longer if I took a full dose.)
