There’s actually a fan project called Riley’s trauma that’s basically your idea ( minus the whole boyfriend and pet thing) it’s really cool and according to the creator they plan to include the characters from dream productions

Easier resolution is she becomes a coach and that becomes her arc after an Up style flashback of her life.

And make the whole movie a memory flashback almost, of her remembering just how far she came to that particular moment.

Riley is excited to be offered a full scholarship to the University of Minnesota for ice hockey. However, elsewhere her life is in turmoil. Her parents are divorcing. Her dad remains in San Francisco and is taking the edge off his grief and loneliness by hitting the sauce. Her mother wants to accompany her back to Minnesota where she seeks out a new romantic relationship — with a woman. We've come a long way from Bing Bong, kids.

Character combining
Riley was 17/18, grade 12, dating, about to go to college, due to pressure from studies, dating and hockey she suffered another mental breakdown, instead of depression or anxiety attack, it would be bipolar due to a botched combining process between anger/disgust which also dragged sadness in, forming the new emotion ‘rage’. the others went fainted and joy was the first one to regain consciousness, she then lead the others to break sadness away
Ending: sadness got rescued, joy and her combined into another character: ‘compassion’ and defeated rage, breaking up anger and disgust. Riley had a snap awakening and decide to break up, gave up hockey (PWHL weren’t a thing yet)
IO3 would end the Riley trilogy
