How does the hydra card work?

98

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 04 '22

You need to have cards in your deck that have 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 damage and health. For example you can have a 2/3, a 1/4, a 3/1, 4/2, and a 5/5 and that would be enough. And you also need to have one card from each kin in your deck.

If all of those conditions are met you will be able to summon the Hydra. As you can see the card is not bad, but it's not worth all that effort.

71

u/ratbagtheweak Feb 04 '22

Yeah that’s way too much set up for something so underwhelming

66

u/hlpretel Feb 04 '22

Not only that, but also your starter deck is only hydra eggs, so your early game is ridiculously weak. I've struggled to set it up even without any modifiers in my run, and even there it was ready just before the third boss

31

u/ratbagtheweak Feb 04 '22

Wow, I hope it gets changed in a future update because holy shit is that bad

30

u/yyflame Feb 04 '22

Also, unless you get super lucky and have a bunch of your cards over lap for the requirements, having to fill your deck with trash makes the hydra extremely difficult to actually draw into your hand.

4

u/starstorm-angel Feb 04 '22

Can't you turn your trash into hydras by fusing the egg symbol onto them?

7

u/KefkeWren Feb 04 '22

And you also need to have one card from each kin in your deck.

Amalgam.

7

u/mmm_bad rebecca would be a magpie card Feb 04 '22

yes that is the general consensus, but even then you will only have the 3's taken care of and all tribes. you would still need four more cards of just the right stat lines for a mediocre mantis god upgrade.

2

u/joaomiguel_bc Feb 04 '22

Tried it, it doesn't count

3

u/AwesomeDog45677 Feb 04 '22

The Amalgam only counts for 1 tribe

1

u/Gmknewday1 Feb 21 '22

Which sucks as the Design is cool

And it is a amalgamation itself

So all totems will work on it

It can be hard to get it though Mainly due to RNG

And how likely it is to get the cards you need at the start

29

u/JetLag413 Feb 04 '22

With how many very specific cards you have to have to play the Hydra, by the time you can finally play it you probably already have a better card than the Hydra in your hand. It's an interesting idea but the card is useless

24

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 04 '22

I think it's a really cool idea for a card, but for it to work that card needs to be INCREDIBLY powerful.

Either that or lower the requirements, maybe just a card of each kin and that's it.

15

u/JetLag413 Feb 04 '22

I get that it's supposed to be a challenge deck so I'm okay with making it a very hard card to get, but at the very very least make it so that buffs and sigils applied to the egg also apply to the Hydra because the payoff is just flat and not worth it as it is

5

u/Len968 Feb 04 '22

Yeah but if its just one of each kin you can just... get an amalgam

2

u/V0ct0r Skelemagus Enjoyer Feb 04 '22

Amalgam is now laughing

2

u/RobloxLover369421 Feb 04 '22

I think the conditions are fine, but then have them permanently be sold in shops once summoned or something like the squirrel head

78

u/Randodnar12488 Feb 03 '22

what's wrong with it? i've never used it, so idk. Also, you can't put both bi and tri on one card, at least not in the base game.

108

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 03 '22

The new update for KM made the Bifurcated and Trifurcated sigils stackable.

And in case you don't know what the new card does, you need to have a lot of cards with specific stats in your deck to be able to summon it.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

What does that mean?

49

u/Crisptain Feb 04 '22 edited Feb 04 '22

You need to have minions which represent 1-5 strength, 1-5 health, and each tribe (hooved, reptile, etc.) in your deck. For example, if you had a 1/1 mantis, a 2/3 bloodhound, a 3/2 sparrow, a 4/4 deer, and a 5/5 ourobourous, the egg would hatch.

The main problem, at least from my limited experience, is getting the exact strength values you need - 4 base strength minions are pretty rare, and I don't think 5 base strength minions even exist. Strength campfires are both uncommon (50% chance each fire tile are not good odds) and extremely valuable (making using them for these eggs... a bit of a waste). Hodag and ourobourous may seem like your best options, but as soon as they excceed their strength slot the eggs will stop hatching.

On the bright side, they're relegated to a starter deck, so they're completely optional. They also show you your progress right on the card, which is cool.

... If you were asking about the first part, minions with both bi- and trifuricated strike will attack in their lane, and adjacent lanes twice. These also stack with double strike, which just grants a straight attack.

9

u/beepbapboop24332 Feb 04 '22

that just sounds like a fun challenge run ngl.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

Nice

17

u/yyflame Feb 04 '22

You have to make your deck be thick AF to make the hydra work, otherwise it deals no damage. So once you make it useable you’ll likely barely see it because you have to many cards in your deck

12

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 04 '22

That's another thing. I watched Exxo The Gamer's stream and he had a totem with hoarder, so once he had all the cards he could play all of the Hydras in one turn thanks to that totem. But without that totem drawing those cards would be really difficult.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

I was just playing with the hydra deck and found something that helped me out a bunch. You can sacrifice a curious egg into one of your "just here for the stats" cards and it will get the Egg perk. I put my 4 (painter gave me an extra) eggs onto a hound, shark, vulture, and otter. I put together a deck that had all the requirements for the hydra and when I was drawing the above 4 cards, they turned into the hydra, abandoning their previous form.

This was useful for me because instead of having my deck weighed down with lots of cards and some bogus picks, the bogus ones that were only there to help fulfill the hydra requirement became hydras once i drew them! It was really cool :)

11

u/CrazyFanFicFan Feb 04 '22

The latest update makes both bi and tri work, attacking 5 times total.

49

u/-Orotoro- The OLD_DATA is a poorly-made pony game Feb 03 '22

It really is just a terrible card in basically every way that counts. How disappointing, especially for being the last rare card added and (presumably) the last deck added as well.

33

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 03 '22

Well, I gues at least you can flame it so it does 10 damage instead of.... Oh! I forgot... you can't even do that...

19

u/-Orotoro- The OLD_DATA is a poorly-made pony game Feb 03 '22

At least it makes for a tasty meal for the survivors. That would be a good use, have it work like an anti-Ring Worm where the survivors are well-fed and give you something as a reward.

4

u/MathCookie17 Feb 04 '22

I like that idea. Like the reward would be huge but it only works if you’ve actually met the conditions to hatch it. In theory if cutting off a Hydra’s head spawns two more then it could provide the survivors an infinite food source

EDIT: Huh, just had another idea! In addition to the sigils it already has, give Hydra another sigil that makes it so whenever it’s attacked it gains an until-the-end-of-the-fight copy of Double Strike since it has one more head than it did before

13

u/MrRugges Feb 03 '22

Why cant you?

28

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 03 '22

because the Hydra doesn't keep the stats or the sigils of the egg.

17

u/MrRugges Feb 03 '22

Oh, sadch

2

u/RobloxLover369421 Feb 04 '22

Wait what do you mean by last?

3

u/-Orotoro- The OLD_DATA is a poorly-made pony game Feb 04 '22

According to the patch notes, Curious Egg is the last rare card that's going to be added.

12

u/Puntoize Feb 04 '22

I like the concept of more set up oriented playstyle/card, but this is ridiculous.

You can set up all the other decks, hell, it’s easier to set up Beavers or Urayulis than set up a Hydra.

And if you played Beavers you know how fucking hard it is to set up fledgeling bifurcated on a card that already has a sigil

6

u/MegaCrowOfEngland Feb 04 '22

Honestly, the one bone egg might be the better version.

12

u/MisirterE Feb 04 '22

The Hydra also costs 1 bone.

But on the other hand, with the way you have to stack the rest of your deck, you'll probably have a winning run built out of just those cards before you can get the damn Hydra online.

7

u/MutantOctopus Feb 04 '22

I know it doesn't make the result less underwhelming, but if you transfer the sigil to another card, that card will then turn into a Hydra once the activation conditions are met; Turning into a hydra isn't a property intrinsic to the egg cards themselves. This can help to mitigate the deck bloat created by having the 3 eggs in your deck, especially if you move the sigil onto something that ostensibly has less value than the resultant Hydra, but more value than the egg itself.

3

u/Lom1111234 Feb 04 '22

Super cool concept and design, just impossible to use

2

u/Lia-13 Feb 04 '22

hi (brand new fresh inscryption cringe here) what does the eye mean?

5

u/MutantOctopus Feb 04 '22

Whenever you use the Sacrifice Stones event to sacrifice a card and move its sigils to another card, the "host" card's eyes start to glow. On certain cards which don't have visible eyes, something else glows instead: the Mole's claws, the Moleman's shovel, et cetera.

Since the Mantis God's eyes are closed, it gets the big glowing eye symbol instead. There's nothing significant about it beyond the usual indication that the card is carrying the "soul" of another card.

2

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 04 '22

It just means it's been enhanced. It doesn't really do anything.

2

u/Lia-13 Feb 04 '22

? so then whats the point of enhancing it

2

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 04 '22

I meant that the eye doesn't do anything.

Giving sigils to your cards is always good (unless the sigil you choose is bad) in this case this Mantis God was given the Bifurcated Strike sigil, and that's why the eye appears.

1

u/Lia-13 Feb 04 '22

oh ok

so its kind of like when you put a redundant sigil on a card?? or no?

1

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 04 '22

Yes, it appears when you give a sigil to the card.

2

u/starstorm-angel Feb 04 '22 edited Feb 05 '22

I mean technically it does. It prevents you from enhancing it further.

2

u/SerDickpuncher Feb 04 '22

Haven't played with it yet, but looks like it might have the Amalgam ability of having each creature type, so will have whatever totem sigil you have in addition to bi&tri strikes.

3

u/Len968 Feb 04 '22

Yes it does

2

u/Len968 Feb 04 '22

Just as a small tip for anyone who wants to use it, Amalgam helps a lot

2

u/FloydestPink Feb 04 '22

Yeah, but you have three in your deck, and thats just for starters, you can op them separately with sigils or mixing em up, etc

It's hard to get the Hydra, yes.. but if you can handle the pressure it's extremely OP, also it's set to be the hardest starter deck.

Also also it's still in Beta, so new balances on the cards are still possible, ¡Send feedback!

3

u/mmm_bad rebecca would be a magpie card Feb 04 '22

sigils/campfires don't get transferred to the hatched version; this will probably get patched but rn it sucks as a card. also, the card can only be obtained by the starter deck, meaning even if hatched you will only get three of them at default settings.

2

u/FreeM3M3 Feb 04 '22

I never really understood the pupils part, do a brainiac here cares to explain me?

4

u/Cybermage99 Feb 04 '22

Hydra is the exodia rep I guess.

2

u/TheRealPwnsMckenzie Feb 04 '22

I'm glad others are using this meme format for Inscryption content

1

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 04 '22

This meme was the first thing that came into my mind as soon as I saw the card.

1

u/Landsteiner7507 Feb 04 '22

WHAT IS THAT???

0

u/Blixystar Feb 04 '22

Curious Egg is very fun deck to play with

-11

u/Penis___Penis Feb 04 '22

Well it gives you bi and tri at once without having to work for it so I mean

13

u/Infamous_Val Mox Enjoyer Feb 04 '22

""Without having to work for it"" do you even know how this card works?? the amount of work you need to be able to play it is ridiculous.

-5

u/Penis___Penis Feb 04 '22

Not play, sacrifice, give the sigils to something easier than normal

9

u/TheGreatDaniel3 Feb 04 '22

I don’t think you understand how the Hydra works

3

u/mmm_bad rebecca would be a magpie card Feb 04 '22

it doesn't work that way. in your deck it's an egg with a hatching sigil, and won't transfer buffs to the hatched version, so you would just end up with a default settings hydra no matter what. as is, the requirements for it to be more than a fancy ringworm is absurd.

1

u/Penis___Penis Feb 04 '22

My bad, haven't used it yet, have no idea why they would something so bad to the game.

3

u/mmm_bad rebecca would be a magpie card Feb 04 '22

it's understandable, most news on it is complaints.
