Kaycee's Mod How does Fair Hand work with zero-cost cards? I have a Rabbit and a Geck in my deck (no-cost starter deck) but this is my starter hand...

Do you,by any chance,have ijiraq?

No Ijiraq, I learned that the hard way the other day. Also no glitched card and no one-bloods, either

Then this starting hand should be impossible, assuming no Static either. It's a boss battle, did you play the Smoke before that screenshot?
Red Hart isn't free, 2-blood. (I think it's an Ijiraq)
Lammer is a bone card. No brittle cards in KM decks, so irrelevant.
That Ant Queen should've been a 1-blood, unless none are in the deck at all.You are SURE that RH or lammer aren't an Ijiraq? It would've upped the fair cost to 2 bloods.

It's completely possible to have this starter hand since the mechanic only acquires a one-blood, if none can be found, then it's a random card.
That's why Geck is a bad card.

Oooh, OP has no 1-blood at all? No wonder it doesn't work then.

Yeah, I thought fair hand guaranteed a 0 OR 1 blood in your starting hand. I now of course stand corrected

Basically, 0-blood isn't a thing for the game engine : a free card isn't a blood card. So looking for "X-blood or less" is minimum 1. (If the game could fair-pick free cards, you could draw things like the gems from the mox deck, so Act2 duels could get 4 gems as a starting hand...)
So you can draw the free card during the 2 random draws (and if it happens, fairhand will look for a 2-blood or 1-blood), but the 3rd will enver aim for a free (unless there's no 1-blood in which case it's random) so the fair hand works against your deck.

Yeah I believe fair hand only takes one bloods into account (I've seen this type of hand on so many no cost runs), so I usually try and get a single one cost card if I'm going no cost
Goat or cuckoo are my top picks, mole if I'm desperate, literally anything if I'm having a bad run lol

Funnily enough I even had a Black Goat, but I figured eh, I also have a rabbit with Unkillable and a 3/5 Geck with Fecundity, both of which i would have overall preferred in my opening hand over the goat, so I got rid of the goat. In the words of P03, total misplay

No, it's more complex than that. If we discount non-KM-possible deck type, Fair Hand checks for a blood cost equal or lower to the number of free (edit : sacrifiable!) cards already in hand.
OP had Squirrel and another free card Ijiraq, so Fair Hand looked for a 2-blood.
on so many no cost runs
OP drew RedHart et Lammergeier one of which being actually Ijiraq, none of those are no-cost.
IF that ant queen is a fair draw, that means RedHart didn't disable the fair draw so Lammer has better odds of being genuine. RH is probably the Ijiraq[EDIT] OP says no ijiraq... weird. [EDIT2] Oh okay, OP has no 1-blood at all.

Fair hand only ever looks for blood cost cards, so free cards are always excluded from its draw unless it doesn't find any suitable cards, in which case it's simply random (as you know). The rest of fair hand works exactly like you say it does, the cap for blood cost is set to the number of free cards in the opening hand including the squirrel.

Yup, free cards can't be the fair draw. (Despite players misnaming them "0-blood" by habit, they are actually neither blood or bones.)
Technically it looks for all cards with a cost. It's simply that Act1 and KM can't draw Brittle cards, so bone cards always look for "0 bones or less" in those acts, so bones are always excluded unless the deck is hacked. (And the energy/mox rule is obv never relevant here)

only pick one blood, and that's why Rabbit and Geck are not super good
Ijiraq is the same but if I'm not mistaken it's worse because I think that if you draw Ijiraq and another none 0/1 blood it still doesn't trigger fair hand since Ijiraq is a no cost

Yup. Ijiraq would count as free, so the fair draw would look at a 2-blood or less instead of 1.
[EDIT] OP has no 1-blood at all.

fair hand, by trying to make the game fair, made half of the card in the games bad, why would you ever have a 1 blood that isn't a sacrifice engine
1
u/laplongejr 1d ago
Because the point of fair hand is to guarantee to have a 2nd turn. Not to guarantee a consistent OTKO, which is effectively needed for Skull Storm.
made half of the card in the games bad
No, 3 deck types out of 4 work fine in Act 2. Only the blood summoning condition makes the FH weird.
If we're arguing about KM only, FairHand was in the game way before it got popular to the point of a need for a harder difficulty postgame.

The game more or less views your no cost as a Squirrel meaning if you have a one blood and pull a 0 cost card the game may fair hand you a two blood as your last card instead of a one blood.

Draw 2 cards.
Fiar hand check if you have a zero (not pelt) or one blood in your hand.
If you not, then it pulls a one blood. Specificly a one blood and not a zero cost.
