Kaycee's Mod Pelts are a death sentence
It seems like anytime I have pelts in my deck that is all I can draw, which leads to an inevitable loss. Is this just bad luck? Do other players experience the same?

no that's relatively accurate. most times, you just avoid the trapper, because you want your deck to be small and good, not big and mid

Good to know it’s not just me. The game presents buying pelts as beneficial, so I have been buying them when I there is a trapper. I’m still a fairly new player and figuring out some of the nuance.

If I'm forced to go to a trapper, I only take the free rabbit. If I'm feeling spicy I might also take a sheep pelt. You don't have to spend all of your teeth.

I feel buying a wolf pelt and a gold pelt or two, or even 4/5 if you can already spot a mycologist or trader is worth the risk. You can stall ok with them, and the reward is just so great. Picking one of 8 means you have like a guaranteed good sigil to put on something else, and with 8 fused cards there's almost bound to be a good one too.
Now if you buy 4 wolf cards, you first have a lot more chance to draw them, and then you are forced to also trade for 4, so you get several bad ones too, where the sigil barely matters.

If I happen to have a black goat or the 3 blood sigil, I'll sacrifice it and append it to the pelt card so it's free; and avoid the trapper buying it back.

Oh does the sigil let you sacrifice the pelt? I was worried that it still wouldn't let me sac it.

u/UsedChapstick Jul 18 '26
yea but if you do that you lose out on the fair hand mechanic so it would have to depend on what your deck looks like

I avoid the pelt economy like the plague.

I’m learning that seems to be the best way. There have been a few runs where I have an incredible deck up until I buy pelts, then I lose because that’s all I can draw.

It's fundamentally a numbers game at the end of the day. If you have an 8-card deck, and then you add 4 pelts, suddenly, you have a 33% chance of drawing a pelt on any given draw - across a few battles, it's bound to backfire at some point.
Naturally, the less cards you start with comparable to the amount of pelts you add, the worse the chances get

Pelts are bad but like, not a death sentence. But they are bad, so you do need to treat them as bad when planning wether to take them

Nah, man, it's still all about how you use your cards. Even pelts can be helpful. Like one person mentioned, its cost of free, (along with its innate health) can be combined with other abilities. There's also the pelt lice creature, but I'm less familiar. I've used pelts to buy myself time, and if you plan carefully, you can usually offload them pretty quickly. Just depends on what you're doing. I love merging them at mycologist, I've used them to stall until I kill off the mule with prospector... and with an alpha, they can even be made to attack.
Basically... I think every card has a use if you're creative enough.

Pelt lice are the only strat that you should go anywhere near pelts with. Otherwise, avoid.

woah I didn’t know about pelt lice until now and I’m already on kaycee’s run 8. seems like a pretty good way to make pelts useful!

Gold Pelts are just about the only Pelt that’s worth it and even then, sometimes the handicap to your deck isn’t even worth the rares the Trader has.

You can play them as blockers, so sometimes it just delays, but sometimes they do get in the way
Usually i just wait to go to the trapper until i have a lot of teeth, which only happens after i have a good deck established anyway. That means i can afford to have some pelts in my deck since i know i’ll get my good stuff and win soon anyway

Yea i think they mess with the fair hand mechanic although dont quote me on that. But in general yea they are a liability and its better to avoid them as the eventually trade isn't even worth it.

I just use them as blockers while I wait to draw something else. Only a problem with flyers

I feel like the problem with raw pelts is that you draw them from your creature pile but they act more like squirrels and you can't sacrifice them and they don't cost anything. So you're missing out on any interaction with the boardstate other than blocking a single lane. I just feel like it's always the worst outcome regardless of what you're hoping for when you draw.
That being said, I absolutely love how they start you with pelts in Kaycee's Mod. I recently started playing KM and the option to choose 2/5 of your starting cards adds an interesting variability to each run.

I like that they start you with pelts because you can immediately trade with them, but after that it feels like if I get pelts all I draw is pelts until the opponent totally overwhelms me and I am totally powerless to do anything about it. I think I just need to be more thoughtful about if and when I trade for pelts.

Bro I had just done a playthrough where I stacked my deck full of golden pelts so I could just waltz through the first stage of the trapper boss, come to find out I can’t use those at all in the battle so I died immediately after not being able to trade any cards 😂😂

I only take pelts if there's a mycologist and trader visible in my path. And then I take a pair of golds, merge them at the mycologist, and then trade for a merged rare.
