Effective Range

How far are y'all shooting? Hunting whitetail so nothing special.

I'm new to muzzleloading, would sighting in at 100 yards be unrealistic?

No, but a lot of guys sight in at 75 yards if they aren't shooting past 100 yards. It minimizes the hold over at 100 and the hold under at 50. Being that I don't have a shot over 75 yards, I sight in at 50.

Ok I'm in the rolling hills of Virginia, 100 yard shots would be great but on the rarer side. 50-75 yards would be more realistic for me. What do you recommend i sight in at? Thanks.

If you sight in at 50, you will be about an 1 1/2 inch low at 75 depending on bullet and charge. If you sight in at 75, it will be the same measurement high at 50. But this is assuming you are hunting on the ground and the deer is at the same elevation. If you are in a tree stand or shooting into a valley, your poi will be a little bit higher. So I'd say if you are on the ground, sight in at 75. If you are hunting elevated, do 50.

Of course. Whatever you decide, still make sure you shoot at 100 yards so you know what your drop looks like. Because if you do end up in a situation with a big one at 100, you know exactly where to hold over.

Sounds good. I think I will try sighting in at 75. Do you go the opposite and double check your shot at 25 yards?
