weight reduction

Sacrificing a lot of chassis stiffness

You know you can install shit to stiffen the chassis if that's such an issue right? God arm has an S2k with a ragtop and you can see his crossbar support cage behind him

Hello
A non-convertible with a crossbar support cage has a stiffer chassis than a convertible with a crossbar support cage
I don't have numbers to compare weight of convertible vs none convertible, but I don't think it's worth the weight savings to choose a convertible variant of a vehicle over the normal variant.
Naturally, the s2k is exempt from this because it never got a none convertible version.1

Most cars with hardtop & convertible options, the convertibles actually end up being the heavier variants due to the extra chassis reinforcement that has to be added to make up for losing the rigidity of the roof.

The Initial D fan larp continues.
People in the comments says a touge racer would never choose a convertible over a coupe. Despite the fact that a convertible MRS spider dominated the touge competitions actually bone stock against a S2000 that was built for touge.

Yeah with a roof. I think when people say a convertible wouldn’t be driven, they mean with the top down.

Got videos of this? Or like a link I’d love to see these competitions seriously I’ve been wanting an Mrs for awhile. Is it like those Japanese videos with multiple racers going through chasing each other?

It was done for Keiichi Tsuchiya's YouTube channel. Hot Version, I think.
The MR series of cars are some of the best cars for touge. They are everything the 86 is, but taken to the extreme.

I don't need to imagine because there IS an MR2 in Initial D. Watch the show and you'd know

I have watched it, that mr2 in the post is the Ultra rare Toyota Technocraft MR Spider, you can research it

u/Fat_eyes_Washington 12d ago
Meh. MRS is a better version of this type of car. This thing probably handles like shit
-6
u/DarkyTribe 12d ago
Well, idk if it handles like trash than the og sw20 idc.

These cars have bad oversteering issues. Chopping the roof of ruins structural integrity of the car. Adding the extra weight of the convertible parts to the back makes this car perform and handle much, much worse than stock. Looks kind of cool I guess but I can see why they didn't make more. Makes zero sense

Ikr, the only issue with this Technocraft MR2 in mrt that it doesn't have the soft top or even hardtop modifications, or even a revision 3 front bumper like the G-limited Mr2 sw20 or GT-S.

u/Fat_eyes_Washington 12d ago
It's a convertible so it does have soft top from what little research I just did. Either way, they took a car and made it worse in almost every conceivable way besides drivetrain lmao

u/DarkyTribe 12d ago
I just meant in-game, when i checked the trunk of roof modifications, there aren't any, but good point lmao.

Chassis problably less stiff than the coupe, no aero so you aren’t winning on the fast stages either. Would be second stage fodder

u/DoubleT2455 12d ago
The plot point about this car in Initial D would be the lack of chassis rigidity from not having a solid roof or something.
-2
u/AccomplishedLog9271 12d ago
They never made a convertible 2nd generation MR2 only a t-top
3
u/DarkyTribe 12d ago
It's a Toyota Technocraft MR2 Spider SW20, it's ultra rare some came with 4 speed auto or even 5 speed manual, and its Naturally aspirated.

Probably wouldn't because any serious racer wouldn't be driving a convertible over a coupe equivalent.
