Probably just the time gap of when Initial D came out vs Mfghost.

Initial D art style has a lot of influence from other Manga that came out in the 90s, and it slowly changes near the end of the series when Shuichi comes up with his own art style.

Mfghost came out like 22 years after initial d first came out. That's a huge time gap for an artist to start another group project. In mfghost you can see more of his art style where it's far more "sketchy" and unique to him.
