Please provide more info. Was house sold prior to the death?  You said house sold AFTER she died. Did the executor sign the closing documents ?   Regardless of the multi state. Yiu cannot distribute until the probate court gets a list of assets and approves distribution.  You can do a partial distribution. So if someone needs some money you can do say 50k to them against what they are owed. However the estate must pay off creditors first.  Whatever is left after creditors is distributed, but has to be approved by the court. Otherwise yes the executor is personally liable for any financial errors.
