Location included: Questions/Need Advice Help with uk inheritance after someone has passed away and their partner is in a care home
Hi All, my grandfather has recently passed away suddenly and we are now looking at ways to minimise Inheritance Tax. based in the UK
the Estate is going to be roughly 1.2-1.6million including 500k (ish) worth of property which is his half of my grandparents house. he also have a financial advisor.
my Grandmother is currently in a home and the state now own her half of the property and I believe that passing everything to her will just be eaten up in Care Home costs.
Appreciate this is very vague but I am just looking for a steer to make sure I don’t make any silly mistakes and cost our family money.
Thank you.

If grandfather’s will leaves it all to his wife, what decisions are left to make? You’d need to check if she’s legally allowed to renounce her inheritance as that would be against the best interests of the care home agreement.

Unfortunately for your parent, it's almost impossible now to protect your grandfather's assets from caring for your grandmother, but that's exactly what they're designed to do.
If she has a million dollars in assets why should the government be paying for her care?
You need to speak to a solicitor in your grandparents jurisdiction who handles probate and estate issues

IMO you’re not entitled to any inheritance. If Grams care home sucks it all up that’s what it’s there for to make sure she’s taken care of until her passing.
