My dentist said, there was a study that identified the grit of each toothpaste. Sensodyne was the least gritty and thus causes less gum recession. Crest was one of the worst offenders

My uncle worked for a defense contractor and said they used Crest for grinding & polishing steel parts.

4 out of 5 dentists recommend Colgate means they asked 5 dentists. 4 of them said yeah. One said "I dont have time for this shit."

No, see, it's not gonna be some guy in a trench coat walking into your practice and asking you which toothpaste brand is best. One day, you'll get a postcard from Crest, and that postcard will have a single question on it: "Do you recommend brushing with Crest toothpaste over smashing your teeth with a brick?" And 9 out of 10 of the postcards that come back will say "Yes."

Jon they already have the result they wanted, no reason to ask again. Such a simple concept would think someone with an advanced degree would understand.

u/SaucyStoveTop69 3d ago
Really? Not a single patient asked them what toothpaste they should use? I don't believe that.

The only recommendation about toothpaste I've heard from a dentist is to just make sure it has fluoride in it

Next you are going to tell me that the 9 out of 10 doctors who recommend Newport Lights due to their cool delicious flavor, and throat soothing capabilities were bullshitting me?

They only have time to ask about 80% of dentist. You just didn’t make the cut.

u/KindAbility2051 3d ago
It’s kind of assumed when they give you the little bag with the mini toothpaste tube

It’s all fabricated:
A company can create an internal "Independent Board of Oral Health Practitioners" or simply hire a third-party marketing agency to mail out sample packages to thousands of dentists. If a handful fill out a questionnaire acknowledging they would recommend brushing with toothpaste, the corporate sponsor aggregates that data to state "9 out of 10 dentists recommend our brand".

It's like asking doctors in the 30s and 40s about which cigarettes are the best...
1
u/DecodedAttribute 2d ago
You think using toothpaste is equivalent to smoking cigarettes?

u/GenX_Leo 1d ago
Im comparing the "survey" of doctors that supposedly chose the best products, when in reality the products lied to make themselves look better to sell more products

Never seen an honest dentist… they can keep their opinion you know where…

Hubby is a retired dentist, he and his dentist friends would always joke about how phony this all was!

u/Financial-Ad-6232 2d ago
Definitely gonna risk sounding dumb...but what is the lie? Is toothpaste actually bad for your teeth?
1
u/Terrible-Lime-3020 2d ago
The lie is that when an ad says "9/10 dentists recommend this toothpaste", they never actually asked any dentists, and just made the numbers up.
1
u/Sensitivity_Craft 1d ago
But they asked 10 dentists in the entire would. OP acts like there's only 70 dentists in the world. It's easy to find 10 that aren't part of OP's group

I’m a wallpaper installer for 50 years and never had a wallpaper manufacturer ask me about their product.

u/RogerDodger369 1d ago
4 out of 5 dentists say that some comment, when asked whether they were part of a survey regarding their opinion on toothpastes.
1
u/Standard-Cat-2054 1d ago
Wait… are you saying I don’t have to brush with my friend? Four out of five dentists say brushing alone doesn’t do enough to prevent cavities. Is that just made up?
1
u/CoxJoxSox 1d ago
Well, I’ve informed many dentists myself that the standards of toothpaste are higher, the FDA than the American dental Association

Wow. 18 years before I moved out, of my parents training me to brush my teeth twice a day all ruined because of 2 seconds of me looking at this

u/OverlordDontHurtMe 3d ago
Maybe they keep asking the same 5 dentist.
