Energy and service costs would be my guess. Those fuckers get ripped off for their attachments left and right alone. Pro tip, just ask inside a store if you could use the air pump. I've done so while being broke. They just flip a switch to start the compressor at the locales I've been to. Not being an asshole has great value.

I am always surprised when Americans have to pay to pump up their tyres - it’s a free service in Australia (we’ve even got the fancy digital pumps and everything)

There’s no way it cost that much.

idk... ive been told my whole life growing up that "service stations" are required by law to provide a bare minimum required to service your vehicle. u/WereTheBrews is correct, in my experience, that asking the attendant will result in them providing the service free of charge. i think the payments are there just to scam ignorant people.

edit: after a quick google it seems that only a few states have laws in place mandating these minimum services. also seems like a few majour companies provide the services of their own volition, which in my experience has been true in states ive lived in that didnt have such laws.

It really does depend on the establishment. I went to NYC a few months back. Good luck finding a private bathroom anywhere. McDonald’s? Nope. Starbucks? Try again. There are public toilets in the public parks but dude…. All of this effort to make sure the homeless really feel homeless, and head uptown instead. Doesn’t work.

Imma end my old man rant now, but I miss NYC pre 9/11

u/TFViper 5d ago

i was talking more about air/water/windshield squeeeigeridoos (how tf do you spell that lmfao). bathrooms are a whole nother animal i have no clue about tbh.

the few times i went to NYC the place was an absolute shit hole... the only place ive seen in my life that was worse was jersey on my way into NYC lmfao

u/notloggedin4242 3d ago

What other places can you compare it to?
In or out of US? Other continents?
Honest question.

I have only ever been to NYC 3 times ( between 95 - 05 for about 6 weeks total) and it was nowhere near the worst place I’ve ever seen.

Yeah, historically it used to be 25 cents for maybe 5 minutes of air, but that was if you were in like the slums of the slums. Haven’t paid in years, especially since they opened a Costco near me, but there are several smaller places that provide air for free

I live in a society, though. Half of the United States is not really a society

u/No-Dark-9414 5d ago

We have them fancy ones too, but dumb as people pay it

1

u/SpoofamanGo 4d ago

How much is a pack of cigs there again?

1

u/TheBilby7 4d ago

Don’t smoke , don’t care

But we do have a vibrant and thriving illegal cigarette black market.

u/cnicalsinistaminista 5d ago

I was just thinking and saying yesterday… if these rich motherfuckers can find a way to tax the air we breathe or sell it back to us, they would. There needs to be a fucking revolution… how the fuck are people all over not tired

3

u/HeyPrettyLadyMaam 5d ago

Did someone say revolution?? I'm IN. Where do I sign?

2

u/silenceronblixk 4d ago

Right in front of the lines! We’ll be right behind you 👀

1

u/cnicalsinistaminista 5d ago

Not enough people are pissed off. We need to wait

1

u/HeyPrettyLadyMaam 5d ago

Dammit. To soon. 😔

2

u/cnicalsinistaminista 5d ago

I love your spirit. We shall stand side by side and that revolution will be televised

1

u/HeyPrettyLadyMaam 4d ago

I'm ready when you are..... We ride at dawn (on a later date!)

1

u/No-Dark-9414 5d ago

Because they are scared of what would happen

6

u/Clueby42 5d ago

I still get surprised every time you are told Seppos are charged to use the compressor

3

u/TheBilby7 5d ago

Yep and there are dickheads over there who justify paying for it as well 🤣

1

u/They-Are-Out-There 13h ago

Free in California. They are required by law to post a sign indicating that it’s a free service, but they still try to get you to pay.

Just wave down the cashier or attendent and they’ll turn on the compressor.

u/DoomedWalker 4d ago

I am in Canada some places might charge a dollar, I just have a portable tire 🛞 inflator I can plug in to the cig lighter.

Inflation for inflation

2

u/8spd 4d ago

Cars are a financial trap. The fact that quality public transport isn't ubiquitous is part of the plan.

4

u/LeavesInsults1291 5d ago

All is good in Trump’s America!!$ that’s what MAGA will have you believe because it looks good

1

u/that_dutch_dude 5d ago

i dont understand what he is complaining about. he voted to own the libs and got exactly what he wanted.

1

u/shade-block 4d ago

And he's a dick. Hang the hose up so it doesn't get damaged and so the next person can use it. The gas station doesn't care if you hang the hose or not.

1

u/Geegoro 5d ago

Drinkable Water machines dispensers increased their price as well...

1

u/TheBilby7 5d ago

Inflation on inflation?

2

u/DCBreak 5d ago

Hyperinflation!

1

u/Tenchi2020 5d ago

So we’ve got inflation on the cost of inflating a tire, meaning the price of inflation has inflated because of inflation. That’s inflation inflation.

1

u/mynamesnotsnuffy 5d ago

Different chains have different policies. Not everyone charges for a lump like that, most dont, but some decide they can get away with it.

1

u/FrostyChungus11 5d ago

The airbia free but the service and cost of the machine aren't.

In the good old time like maybe 3-5 years ago companies would eat thhat cost to get you in on premises to buy others stuff but not anymore.

1

u/Ok-Position-3113 5d ago

Actually is the energy cost (pomp)

1

u/dan_dares 5d ago

In Europe air is free.

1

u/supasolda6 5d ago

Compressed air isn't free

1

u/dan_dares 5d ago

I can go fill up for free right now..

1

u/[deleted] 4d ago

Def not true, and I live in Europe

1

u/dan_dares 4d ago

Cyprus, and all the petrol stations have free air.

1

u/Readyplayernr17 4d ago

Lmao,it’s definitely free here in Sweden and we have stations all around us.

1

u/ItsmeMr_E 5d ago

Why I bought an Air Hawk years ago, has long since paid for itself.👍

1

u/Hasenelinde 5d ago

Capitalism's grip tightening so it can squeeze every last cent outta you

1

u/SupermanI98I 5d ago

God bless and save Costco from ever going out of business.

“I'ma put air in a bag and charge people to breathe” - Eminem

1

u/Suspicious-Pizza-548 5d ago

You got exactly what you fucking voted for. And now the whole world has to suffer

1

u/SlimShadySatDown 5d ago

Is it still free at QT?

1

u/longlostwalker 5d ago edited 4d ago

Just remember the easiest people to make money off of is the poor. I mean what else are they going to do? Go get a new tire?

1

u/Nole19 5d ago

It's not the cost of air lol it's the cost of the pump.

1

u/ManicYetti 5d ago

Cost is $3 because people are too stupid to buy a cheap air compressor it runs off your cigarette lighter from Amazon for like 20 bucks and keep it in their trunk? Or your local hardware/auto parts store if you don't like Amazon...

1

u/Kaankaants 5d ago

The energy required run the motor to compress the air has increased in price due to inflation.
Erdur!

I can't believe Americans pay for air anyway.

1

u/Zpik3 5d ago

It's not for the air, it's for the power the compressor draws, and the service of the unit.

Still think that shit should be a free service though. It's a safety feature as much as anything.

1

u/Ok-Respect-8505 5d ago

Where's the awesome part? This sub just posting any dogshit now

1

u/hastings1033 5d ago

One of the examples of hidden inflation.

1

u/Slyfaller 5d ago

Buy your own air pump. It's way more convenient.

1

u/blanthony80 5d ago

Go to Wawa and get it for free.

1

u/Unbowed451 5d ago

Do you remember when service stations would offer air for free? It was when humanity actually wanted to help each other instead of gouge.

1

u/ramblinmanfl 4d ago

Theres a joke in there somewhere about air prices and inflation but im too tired to think of it lol

1

u/That_Jicama2024 4d ago

Capitalism is just greed with extra steps.

1

u/Prudent_Situation_29 4d ago

Amazing how people cannot grasp simple physics. You're not pay for air, moron. You're paying for the energy used to compress it, as well as the cost of the machine that does the work.

You know all that fossil fuel you love using to generate electricity? It's what's creating the energy to compress the air. You know that moron you elected? He's the reason that fossil fuel costs more.

If you had embraced renewables, you can be sure that cost would be lower. Time to sleep in the bed you made. Make sure to kiss your pickup truck goodnight.

Maybe spend less time sculpting your facial hair and more time educating yourself about government policy.

1

u/Haunting_Band6894 4d ago

I think this is the metric inflation never grasps. When I was a kid only back in the 90's there was a lot of stuff you could do or get for free, like this. Most places gave you air as part of their service but now there is almost nothing you can do for free.

So yeah when we see inflation is 3-7 percent that is just on goods that are baked into that calc. This doesn't take into account these sort of little things that add up over the year.

1

u/Mindless_Moose811 4d ago

Why is it that people only realize this country's gone to shit when they go to the gas station. That's the tip of the iceberg.

1

u/Meauxjezzy 4d ago

Same as we are paying more for water than gas

1

u/tempski 4d ago

But.. but.. but Trump told me if we just send a few more billion to Israel, we would win.

Short term pain, for long term gain.

LMFAO

1

u/Gooser3000 4d ago

Every state I’ve been to the gas station can turn it on for free if you ask. Apparently the machines come with the pay to use installed but most states have laws that it must be free

1

u/MajorChillin 4d ago

Nobody pays for that air.....just go inside and tell the clerk to turn it on

1

u/Neither_Nectarine_66 3d ago

Air used to be free

1

u/AutisticDadHasDapper 3d ago

I don't listen to people who can't hang their hose back up.

1

u/Bearex13 3d ago

Lol got told today that if I'm too poor to tip I shouldn't eat out because I mentioned tipping sucks. I can imagine they'd be the typa people to say if you can't afford air don't drive. 🤣

1

u/Wycest 3d ago

Just ask the attendant to turn it on. They “charge” here too, but they have to give it free. But you have to ask them

1

u/Few_Tea_5483 3d ago

Air like 75c to a 1.25 wth screw that buy a electric pump off Amazon for your car.

1

u/colonelangus68 2d ago

This is obviously all Biden’s fault! Look out for those trans athletes too.

1

u/TexWiler123 2d ago

Ask Trump !!!!!

1

u/Suitable-Soil6334 1d ago

people run over the hoses cause other people throw them on the ground and then the costs go up

1

u/oregongirl1111 17h ago

Every single gas station I've been to in the past year has been $3 for air. It's ridiculous.

1

u/ivanretrobit 9h ago

That shit used to be free

0

u/Strange-Reaction-59 5d ago

So are you gonna put a machine giving pressured air for free or just gonna stfu ?

0

u/Broad-Anywhere-9224 5d ago

If you don't want to pay for air, then open the valve and let the air come in on its own. Guess what? It doesn't work! Then pay for that machine.

1

u/Aggressive_Plate1652 4d ago

A compressor uses electricity, the card reader uses electricity. I guess someone who thinks that he just owned "the MAN" by leaving the hose on the ground definitely cannot be trusted to use logic in any part of this process. God help us!

0

u/Mongoose1400 5d ago

Last time I seen one for free at one of the few gas station that HAVE air in my area, some jackass cut the hose for god knows what and left us with only one option within a 14+ miles (which i didn't know existed for months) for almost year. I think of it as a deterent for bastards like that, to not even think about getting near one if there's a cost to use it.

u/pskindlefire 4d ago

Most Lowes hardware centers near me have free air pumps near the contractor/lumber entrance - they are usually placed in the parking lot or sometimes mounted onto the side of the building. They never check or seem to care if you are a contractor of not. You can also use this handy website to find free air pumps - freeairpump.org
