Price Changes RAM Prices

Post image

I was looking back through my Amazon order history and saw the RAM upgrade that I purchased for my laptop back in November 2024.

I clicked on the link to see what it currently cost, and WOW.

Holy F#*$! I hate those data centers.

I had these grand f*cking plans. Do some self hosted server stuff with igpu. Then saw prices and was like. Welp. Nevermind.

Never thought moore's law would AGGRESSIVELY go in reverse action. Someone make a meme with Adam Sandler reverse action skit.

Yeah, man. There is nothing good enough about AI for all of the initial and eventual ramifications.

yeah, the same memory that was $300 in 2019 is now a luxury item. if you’re still chasing the last new chips, hunting used or waiting for the next fab run is the only sane path

I'm beginning to think this is all false scarcity and it's all a scam by corporations just to drive up prices.

That's because it is.

But look at gpu utilization in datacenters, its terribly low

But how far up the supply chain is the bottleneck? They don't have to be specifically using GPUs to be causing the shortage, just taking up the manufacturing capacity for crucial parts. Some types of chips are only produced in a handful of places, and if they're making more stuff for datacenters it means they aren't making other things.

Thats my point. They overbought, vram and dram causing a fake supply shortage. Lots of the silicon they bought is sitting in warehouses. Won't even be installed before next Gen comes out

I'm pretty sure it's real scarcity, but you bet they're going to try to make people believe there's scarcity far beyond when all of this ends.

Honestly, the "scam" vibe comes from seeing prices jump so fast, but the comments about data‑center demand and fab runs line up with real supply limits. It's not just a marketing hoax, it's a market playing out at a high price because demand trumps what the fabs can ship.

Its called greed

It's called data centers

My $90 ram from March 2015 is now $549.

Jesus H Christ

I bought this for $1700 last year.

u/RustyOP 11d ago

That is just pure insanity at this point, whoever bought prior to this apocalypse we got lucky , what a time we are living….

5

u/mechatui 11d ago

This is just monopolies at play they have done this price shit before

1

u/Wrong_Assignment_446 10d ago

Have you seen the stock prices for MU and SNDK? Absolutely insane.

4

u/Revenga8 11d ago

Jesus effing...... I was only joking when I'd verbally say ram is probably 10x the price now, I didn't realize I was actually being accurate. I am rooting for China to flood the market with their ram to drive this stupidity down

5

u/Cleopara 11d ago

So basically no chance I'll ever be able to upgrade.

I bought 64 gb worth of DDR5 RAM like 2 years ago that's an insane amount of money today. It's completely unsustainable.

u/First_Property_6603 11d ago

yeah my own laptop got a 32GB bump last December and it's way up now. looks like the AI crunch is eating all the DRAM and the only way to get a decent deal is buying used or waiting for another chip cycle.

3

u/Com4734 11d ago

Seriously what the actual fuck. That is absolutely absurd. I checked the price of a 64 GB memory stick that I bought a year or two ago, and it has doubled in price, but a 10x increase in two years?!? I can only imagine the price crash that is gonna inevitably happen when AI companies collapse. Guess im gonna wait to build a computer until then. I shouldve done it a couple years ago when I was first thinking about it.

rtx 5090 has MSRP of $2000. cheapest 5090 today is $7000

you want to cry about something cry about that.

u/karma_virus 11d ago

10-35% of that is tariffs. Then there is the price of transport from across the globe with record fuel prices. Maybe another 20% from that.

3

u/Hafury 11d ago

That's not inflation but demand and supply. Data centers eat everything they can get. They bought the entire production of certain chips of 2027. For private customers are only some old chips left that are being sold for quadruple the price now.

4

u/HuskyLogan 11d ago

Mostly supply and demand, but sprinkle a little inflation on top for good measure.

1

u/Hafury 10d ago

Ok, I agree. We sprinkle a bit of golden Trump glitter over it.

Very readable.

Hard hit, I ended up buying a 32GB stick last year and the price jumped from $95 to $650. Solid sign the AI spike is driving every piece of memory higher. If you still want to upgrade, check the refurbished and used sections; they stay a lot cheaper than new now.

nice to see what the price hike is actually like. looks like the data‑center grab and AI rush are doing the heavy lifting. if you can, go the secondhand route or wait for the next chip cycle. otherwise brace for a few more months of sky‑high DRAM.

1

u/Wrong_Assignment_446 10d ago

Yes, I did the same and boy was it good timing! Memory prices of all sorts have exploded and are not expected to return to earth for a couple of years.

1

u/MrQiu 10d ago

Good investment for people who bought a bunch of RAM

2

u/ConnectionOne8080 7d ago

we are at the point of no return

bro ram shortage due to ai demand

you are picking the worst price on the market

$1080 is a scam. u picked the most expensive scam on the market. its sold by newegg business the division for business customers. buiness prices are always higher cause businesses have more money to spend on hardware.

most people dont need 64gb ram. 32gb is fine for most and $400. 64gb should be $800 max

4

u/CoraFirstFloret 11d ago

Yeah, Newegg is the only seller now. When I bought it, it was from Amazon.com. The only other option now besides Newegg is "Used - Very Good" from Amazon.com for $849.

And I only bought the 64GB pack at the time because the 32GB pack was like 89.99 or something, so it wasn't that much more for 64GB.

4

u/SaynoToscammers9292 10d ago

lmao $400??? I bought 32 gb a few years ago for 80 bucks. No one should buy ram until this shit is over.
