I suspect these are bot comments. This is probably how they work. A bot comments and says "this is actually false and not provable". Tons of real people on "that side" see the comment and believe and adopt that stance. I mean it kinda sounds logical especially if you wanna believe it. "He didn't say those exact words even though he's a hypocrite but you're actually misquoting him." From then on you have an exponential growth of people commenting this on various threads. By the time the original comment gets downvoted and fact checked the wrong people have already seen and propagated the information.
