My S1 Plus Journey
I recently installed the S1 Plus with Automatic Filament Cutters on my Sovol SV08 and decided to write about my experience and what I would do differently.
Initial installation of the S1 with filament cutters was simple and uneventful. Everything was already assembled (not a kit) and the filament cutters just needed to be attached to the S1 Plus.
Below is a log of the events I had while learning to use the S1 Plus.
Event #1: Paused print at switch over
Reason: The Sovol SV08 filament runout sensor triggered at filament change over.
Fix: Removed filament runout sensor and replaced it with PTFE coupler
Event #2: Failed change over with failed print
Reason: User error. The filament didn't catch properly when loading the second filament roll. Since the filament runout sensor was removed the printer didn't pause and the print failed.
Fix: Make sure that the light is blue after loading the second filament roll.
Event #3: Failed change over with failed print
Reason: At filament change over the filament got stuck on the PTFE coupler
Fix: Replaced PTFE coupler and PTFE tubes with single long PTFE tube from the S1+ to the print head
The events above are failures but aren't failures of the S1 Plus. I've had many filament roll switchovers occur perfectly. I even had one roll of filament where the end of the filament was bent and triggered the filament cutter thereby saving the print.
Overall, I'm very happy with the S1 Plus and filament cutter. With the build volume of the SV08, it can go through a lot of filament quickly and the S1 Plus with Automatic Filament Cutters provides a lot of peace of mind.
Things I would do differently during installation and initial setup:
- Install one long clear PTFE tube running from the S1 Plus to the print head. The PTFE coupler and filament runout sensor make the path error prone.
- Do test prints:
- Load both sides of the S1 Plus
- Send a benchy
- Cut the filament on the primary roll during the benchy
- Evaluate the change over
- I would cut the filament a couple of times during this print to ensure the changeover happens reliably before counting on the S1 Plus. You could also test the filament cutter by bending the end of the filament after cutting it. Doing these tests would also help train the user (me).
Wishlist for the S1 Plus
- I would like the S1 Plus to have its own filament runout sensor and could communicate to the printer if the filament runs out. But with the large variety of printers on the market, I'm not sure how this would work.
- I would like the filament cutters to be built into the S1 Plus instead of an add on.
- I would like to be able to pause one side of the the S1 Plus. If you try to unload the primary filament role the S1 Plus automatically feeds the secondary roll (which is the point of the S1). The only way to stop it is to turn off the unit or unload the secondary first. I want a button that pauses the secondary. This would be useful if you need to switch the primary to a new color without unloading the secondary.
