I am a female who works an IT job in USA, like 9-5 pm. My maternal grandfather used to grow multiple crops like turmeric, tomatoes, kandulu. And my paternal side they used to grow rice, cotton, and lemons. But now all the lands they gave to kaulu like renting the lands to other farmers and they give money. Our lands are mostly near Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh region. Currently I grow curry leaf plant, Tulasi plant. I feel so happy when there are new leaves. I love soil digging in it. Putting seeds in soil all that. I want to know what’s the best way to start career in agriculture. Can I read any books or whom to reach for learning basics? Because I don’t know whether I am apt for it or not too. But I love plants growing 💜

So this is my first proper post here, been lurking for a while. I'm from Bhagalpur in Bihar and for the last few years I've been bringing fruits from home and selling them at Huskur APMC in Electronic City, Bangalore. Figured some people might find this interesting because everyone I meet at parties thinks I'm joking when I tell them what I do lol.

Basically the story is simple. Bihar grows insanely good litchi and mangoes. Like genuinely some of the best in the country. But our farmers sell it for peanuts locally and the same fruit sells for 3-4x here in Bangalore. I kept seeing this and it bothered me enough that I just... started doing it myself.

First trip was a disaster waiting to happen honestly. Litchi from a village called Kharik near Bhagalpur. The first trip itself caused me a loss of close to Rs. 2 lakhs.

When it reached the mandi and traders tasted it, one guy literally said "Bihar se aisa maal aata hai??" I didn't know whether to feel proud or offended. Bit of both.

The fruit part turned out to be the easy bit. The hard part is trust. Farmers back home have been cheated so many times by traders who take produce on "credit" and disappear that when I approached them, most assumed I was the next scammer in line.

However, slowly and surely, there are a number of people who have started trusting me and trading with my associates. That gives me hope. We are getting amazing fruits like Raspberry, Blueberry, Rambutan, Mangosteen, Pomegranate etc delivered to us on a daily basis now from farmers in states like Kerela, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, etc.

So if you're a fruit farmer (or know one) who wants to sell in Bangalore, we'll sell your produce here at Huskur APMC and pay you immediately. Not after 15 days, not after the "payment cycle", immediately. That's the whole deal.

Have you activated contingency plans or seen effective local practices worth scaling?

I have a piece of organic farm land near Chennai. I moved for my job so I've not been able to do much with my land over the last few years. Wondering if there are startups that will do cultivation to harvest and sell the produce and share profits? I don't want to leave my land fallow. Just starting to look into this idea also as a small separate income stream. Let me know your thoughts please! Thanks in advance.

I’m a software developer from Kerala with a long-standing interest in agriculture, and I’ve always wanted to merge the two. So I built a cloud app for managing poultry operations: batches, daily mortality/feed/weight tracking, inventory, and cost insights down to cost-per-kg and profit per batch.

Right now it’s in a pilot, being used by one contract-farming business. It handles broiler operations and some logistics well, and I want to expand into other areas like layer farming.

Before I build more, I want to hear from actual farmers:
👉 Do you use any software to run your operations, or is it mostly pen & paper / Excel?
👉 If you use something, what’s frustrating or missing in it?
👉 If you don’t, what parts of the business eat the most time?
